The New University Cooperative is pleased to announce our inaugural 2009 Summer Short Course Program, which will be held from August 1st - 28th 2009, in Nova Scotia. A residential course offering, the theme of the course is Sustainability and Social Justice: Capacity for Social Transformation.

Founded in 2005, The New University Cooperative seeks to reclaim higher education and in so doing is building a New University in Canada, founded on principles of sustainability and social justice, inclusive and accessible to all. The 2009 Summer Short Course Program will provide a transformative education: a critical and diverse learning experience that gives graduates the understanding and skills needed to address the problems of increasing unequal distribution of wealth and ecological degradation which is impacting local and global communities.

Directed and taught by two resident professors, and augmented by guest lectures, field trips, community service learning and workshops, the course also provides opportunities for hands-on learning in such areas as gardening/farming, carpentry, renewable energy, pottery, green building, art and music.

Core course content seeks to provide students with a foundation in various sub-themes, including nonviolence, movements for economic and environmental justice, ecological lifestyle and community development.

Who should apply?
The Residential Summer Course Program is a rigorous academic program, designed to be compatible with university level education, and applicants should be prepared for intensive academic inquiry. The program is non-discriminatory, and there are no required qualifications related to age, race, culture, previous educational experience, etc, that are needed in order to apply.

Costs, including organic, local and fair-trade meals, transportation during the program (field trips etc.), accommodation and tuition, are on a sliding scale from $400-$600/student.
