Operations Coordinator - Joggins Fossil Institute

Summary of Responsibilities:

The Operations Coordinator is responsible for the overall quality of the services offered at the Joggins Fossil Cliffs UNESCO World Heritage Site and for ensuring that high standards of customer care are met. The Operations Coordinator recruits and manages customer service staff (admissions, cafe and retail). The Operations Coordinator is responsible for overseeing revenue-generation centres including the gift shop, food-service concession, and rentals. In partnership with the Curator of Palaeontology, the Operations Coordinator assists in scheduling and delivery of educational programs for visitors to the Joggins Fossil Centre and Cliffs, as well as outreach programs and extension programs.

Duties:

• Provide direction and supervision for the safe and efficient daily operation of the Joggins Fossil Cliffs and Joggins Fossil Centre
• Recruit, schedule and evaluate all seasonal staff including interpreters, students, and café staff
• Implement a training program for seasonal staff including health & safety, customer care, product knowledge, point of sale and merchandising
• Recruit and manage volunteers
• Promote, manage and implement community events
• Coordinate group and school bookings, including organisation of catering and tour requirements
• Manage special event bookings and promotion of facilities available to the public
• Manage visitor communication and orientation through signage and provision of on-site and internet based information including social media updates
• Address customer enquiries
• Creating relationships through the development of customer data capture methods
• Develop and implement an evaluation plan to enable the harvesting of public and visitor perceptions
• Set communication standards and draft operational policies for the Joggins Fossil Institute (JFI).
• Support the development and implementation of the strategic and annual plans for the Joggins Fossil Institute
• Attend Board of Directors meetings and any JFI committee meetings when issues
pertaining to visitor services or marketing is on the agenda
• Manage the operations of the Roundhouse Café and the Joggins Fossil Centre Gift shop
• Act as a spokesperson for JFI and respond to inquiries from the public as required
• Working with the Director and Curator of Palaeontology, prepare and submit funding application and access alternate sources of revenue (through donations, sponsorship and other non-government sources)
• In collaboration with the Joggins Fossil Institute Director and Curator of Palaeontology, develop an annual work plan and budget to meet revenue and attendance targets
• Other duties as assigned by the Director

Qualifications

• Education: A relevant Bachelor's degree including training in sales and financial management is required; a degree in Business or Heritage Management is preferred.

• Experience: five years professional experience, including at least one year in a managerial role, with financial and supervisory duties
• The ideal candidate will have a demonstrable record of achievement for marketing in a non-profit environment, preferably a tourism site, and an affinity for, if not experience in, heritage tourism
• The candidate must have a demonstrated ability to understand, assess and meet competing needs within an environment of limited resources
• Equivalent education and experience will be considered
• Languages: Fluency in English is required; French is an asset
• Computer and Office Applications:
- Microsoft (r) Windows OS, Microsoft Office(r), Microsoft(r) Internet browser
- General Office Equipment: Photocopier, Facsimile, etc.

• Communication Skills:
- Ability to communicate effectively with clients, donors, volunteers, or members of the business community
- Experience in media relations is a strong asset
- Ability to effectively present information to individuals, public groups, the Board of Directors and other leaders in an inspiring and motivational way
- Ability to negotiate, facilitate and deal with competing demands and conflict, sensitively and constructively to achieve desired outcomes

- Work independently and collaboratively
- Organized, reliable, detail-oriented
- Articulate and poised

• Must have a valid driver's license and access to a reliable vehicle
• Must be willing to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends as requested.
• Be bondable, pass a criminal record and a child abuse registry check
