INTERNSHIP POSITION

Position: Farm intern
Type: full-time internship with accom., meals, stipend (see below)
Organization: Watershed Farm
Location: Baker Settlement, South Shore, Nova Scotia (near Bridgewater)

We are located on the beautiful South Shore of Nova Scotia on a magnificent hilltop surrounded by rolling hills of pasture, woods, creeks, rivers and lakes. The farm property consists of 250 acres, most of which is our FSC certified forest. We farm our crops using biodynamic principles and some permaculture methodology on less than an acre and a half, primarily using hand tools in raised beds. We also manage a flock of approximately 70 chickens, 26 sheep using a rotational grazing system and we presently have five beehives.

We have been blessed with a few wonderful WWOOFers this year, including some returning friend/WWOOFers but now we need more hands as the harvest is just beginning. Our greenhouses and caterpillar tunnels are bursting with tomatoes, peppers and cucumbers that need to be harvested. Our seed saving projects require ongoing attention and we are just seeding and transplanting our fall crops right now. Garlic is about to be pulled from the ground and hung to cure in the barn. Medicinal herbs are ready to be collected and dried, herb vinegars should be started any time now and blueberries picked. We attend a few weekly farmer’s markets and sell vegetables, cut flowers and herbs to local restaurants as well. We also host events, workshops, school field trips and sustainable housing and farm tours on occasion and ask that our helpers assist with these events when possible.

We are seeking workers who will stay for a minimum of two weeks and are honest, hard working and dependable. We work five and a half days a week. Generally during the hottest days of the summer we start early before things heat up too much and work till lunchtime after which we try to take a swim in the nearby river and chill for a while before getting back to work as the heat of the day begins to wane. Some of the jobs you will be expected to participate in include ensuring animals have fresh food and water, egg collecting and washing, moving sheep every couple of days to fresh pasture, irrigation of crops, harvesting, weeding, trellising, pruning, preparing crops for market, seed collecting, seed starting, transplanting, small building projects, selling at markets, tilling new garden beds, seeding cover crops, mowing and whipper snipping, etc.

We provide comfortable living quarters in three different buildings: a barn dorm with its own washroom, a strawbale building with kitchen and washroom, and a very quaint small wooden cabin. WWOOFers and interns occasionally eat with our family in the farmhouse but have a complete kitchen set up in the strawbale building for their own use. We supply all groceries, most of which is straight from the garden, meat from our animals and all staple ingredients. We ask for respectful use of the space, cleanliness and sharing of household chores amongst those staying on the farm. We have WIFI and laundry facilities available at our farmhouse.

For those staying for one month or longer we offer a stipend that starts at $300 a month and is negotiable based on experience and performance.
