APPRENTICESHIP POSITION

Position: Farm worker/apprentice http://FoodWork.ca/993823
Type: paid experienced apprenticeship
Organization: Windy Hill Organic Farm
Location: McKees Mills, New Brunswick

We are offering a paid apprenticeship on our organic farm from May 1 till October 31 of this year. We have a 45 acre farm and manage about 4 acres vegetables, strawberries and rhubarb with another 3 acres of pasture and a 1/4 acre orchard. We are certified organic and in the process of creating a Permaculture orchard. We have a small herd of dairy/meat goats, produce our own cheese and yogurt for our own consumption and sell some goat meat. We raise a few chickens for meat and keep a small flock of hens for eggs. At this time our livestock aren't certified organic due to the difficulty of obtaining organic feed, but we're working on it! Our vegetables are marketed mainly through a CSA and farmer's markets. We sell cooperatively at one farmer's market through a group called Coin Bio/Organic Corner and are planning to start selling at another market this year through another co-op.

This area is predominantly French speaking and we are Anglophones trying to learn French. The local community is very supportive of our farm and we find the significant population of artists, foodies and environmentalists to be just our sort of people! We are close to beaches and some great parks (large and small) as well as a couple of small towns that are well supplied with the basics of life.

We offer accommodation on the farm in a fully equipped tiny house that includes basic foodstuffs (flour, sugar, pasta, peanut butter, pulses, rice, etc.) as well as all farm products that are available at the time. The space is small and we find it works better for single people than couples. We don't allow any pets because we have plenty of those and we are a drug-free environment (alcohol used responsibly is okay).

We are looking for someone experienced in farm work (particularly vegetables) who has an interest in livestock and learning about incorporating livestock into annual crop systems. Work will include vegetable jobs: planting, weeding, harvesting, preparing for market, selling at farmer's markets if interested; livestock jobs: feeding, collecting eggs, moving pens, milking goats, cleaning, cheese-making if interested. As well as all the other jobs that arise on a farm. We support learning by doing and encourage our apprentice worker to take on a project of their own on the farm which could involve crops, livestock, marketing, food processing, other. We offer 40 hours a week though there may be less work at the start and more in the middle of the season. Salary depends on level of experience and will be negotiated on a case by case basis.
