GM Salmon Campaign Coordinator

The Ecology Action Centre is seeking a part-time GM Salmon Campaign Coordinator for a nine month contract with possibility of extension and/or increase in hours based on funding and performance. The Coordinator’s responsibility will be to advance EAC’s GM salmon work in particular to engage with decision makers and to educate the media and Canadians about the risks to wild salmon. The EAC is seeking to prevent the commercial development of GM salmon because of the risk it poses to wild Atlantic salmon. The Coordinator reports to EAC three directors and works closely with the Policy Director and EAC’s marine and food teams.

Campaign Specific Responsibilities 
• Communicate to the media, decision-makers and stakeholders the risk GM salmon poses to wild salmon.
• Engage with decision-makers to ensure the protection of wild salmon from GM salmon.
• Provide logistical and outreach support for any legal challenges in which EAC may be involved.

General Responsibilities 
• Engage with the federal decision makers and indigenous peoples on policy on GM salmon
• Provide communication materials for social and traditional media
• Develop and strengthen relationships with allies and stakeholders, such as recreational fishing groups and environmental groups
• Provide logistical and communication support for any related legal challenges
• Raise funds as required for GM salmon work
• Track any scientific, legal or policy developments relating to GM salmon
• Provide support to a market-based campaign as required
• Participating in and supporting the overall work of the Ecology Action Centre
• Other tasks, as required

Skills and Experience 

Required
• Strong interest in and knowledge of environmental matters, in particular the scientific and policy dimension of biodiversity conservation
• Excellent communication skills, both oral and written, and strong command of social media including ability to explain complex issues clearly and concisely
• Project management skills: ability to work independently and as part of a team, manage projects and budgets, develop funding proposals, effectively manage multiple tasks and manage and use time efficiently
• Ability to develop and strengthen relationships with other stakeholders
• Computer literacy in MS Office, including Word, Excel, FrontPage
• Available some evenings and weekends and willing to travel within NS

Desirable
• Experience working with governments on policy matters
• Experience working with media and public speaking
• Experience working with an NGO including market-based campaigns
• Fundraising experience
• Scientific or legal background

Start/End Dates: February 29, 2016 to November 25, 2016. Potential for extension and/or increase in hours contingent on funding.

Wage and Benefits: $21.50/hour; 20 hours/week;

Location: Halifax, Nova Scotia in EAC’s wonderful green office
