Project officer - integrating ecosystem services into landuse planning

Nature NB is looking for a dynamic, and creative individual who is passionate about the environment and landuse planning. The successful candidate will possess strong technical knowledge of computers, have some background in GIS, some experience in landuse planning would be an asset. He/she will have experience and knowledge in biology or ecology, and will demonstrate interest and knowledge of environmental issues. Specific skills and knowledge of climate change adaptation, ecosystem services, and environmental non-profit organizations are assets but not requirements of the position.

Project Description:

As climate change impacts are forecast to increase the risks from coastal storm surges, inland flood events, drought events, as well as placing increased stressors on ecosystems, land use planning that incorporates ecosystem services and functions, can reduce human exposure to those risks and can play a significant role in community resilience. The project represents a grassroots, hands on, practical approach that is grown out of a need to reduce the deterioration of ecosystems while addressing risks that climate change impacts pose to human health and safety. In addition to developing a methodology, we will raise awareness about using ecosystem services in climate change adaptation, especially flood risk reduction. We will best management practices on how to incorporate ecosystem services into adaptation decision-making, and work with landuse planners to incorporate ecosystem assets into landuse planning, focusing on flood risk reduction. The long-term benefit will be an increased r
 esiliency of communities and environments, reduced costs for the implementation of adaptation measures (using ecosystem-based adaptation where appropriate and feasible), an appreciation for and maintenance and restoration of ecosystem services (water quality, biodiversity, habitats), and a reduction in stressors on ecosystems.

Qualifications Required:
• A university degree (either bachelors or masters) related to environment, and/or landuse planning.

Knowledge, experience, skills:
• Knowledge of the principles of climate change and adaptation, risks and impacts, and how they relate to landuse management;
• Some experience with GIS software;
• Understanding of ecosystem services and functioning, through education or experience;
• Understanding of environmental non-profit organizations (experience);
• Bilingualism is an asset, though not required.
• Strong communication skills.

Assets:
• Experience in landuse planning through education or experience;

Term of Employment:

This position is a full-time contract starting August 1, 2016 until March 2018. Salary will be based on selected candidate’s experience (minimum 20$/ hour).

Moncton or Sackville, New Brunswick
