Position Title: Clean Water Project Officer
Organization: Community-Based Environmental Monitoring Network
Location: Halifax, Nova Scotia
Position Status: 12 month position
Hours: Full-time [37.5 hours per week]
Wage: $20-$22 hr
Start Date: As Soon as Possible
This role is offered as part of the Clean Leaders Science Horizons Internship program.
About the Community-Based Environmental Monitoring Network (CBEMN)
The Community-Based Environmental Monitoring Network (CBEMN) is a non-governmental organization housed in Saint Mary's University and has been operating for over a decade. Its objectives are to increase and coordinate community capacity for environmental monitoring; provide equipment, data management resources, information, and training to stewardship organizations; facilitate collaborative networking; and conduct training and educational outreach with community-based organizations and the public. Through its projects, the CBEMN has created a standardized water monitoring training program and complementary equipment toolkit (http://wet-pro.ca) for watershed organizations.
Responsibilities
This is an exciting opportunity to join a growing, Atlantic Canada-wide initiative. The successful candidate will gain valuable hands-on experience including training community water monitoring partners, open access data management, fundraising and communications. This a one year contract with possibility of renewal based on the needs of the evolving initiative. The hired intern will report to the CBEMN Program Manager.
Key areas of responsibilities will include:
Facilitate Training to community partners throughout Atlantic Canada. Training will include traveling to partners offices and monitoring sites to offer hands on training to staff and volunteers on calibration techniques, monitoring protocols and data management. Basic knowledge of water monitoring protocols is preferable but all required training will be provided.
Manage the CBEMNs Equipment Bank program. The CBEMN runs a free equipment loan program to community partners throughout Atlantic Canada. The intern will be responsible for coordinating loans throughout the field season, which includes calibrating equipment, organizing pick up and drop offs throughout the season.
Assist community partners in managing and uploading historical data to DataStream (an open access platform for sharing water data) as well as onboarding new partners.
Assist with fundraising and grant applications
Administrative support as needed
Qualifications:
Passion for the environment and a desire to work in the clean water field
Preferred candidate will hold a Masters degree in a related field, but candidates with Bachelors degrees and relevant experience will be considered
Practice in planning and managing events
Excellent organizational, communication, presentation and relationship building skills
Problem-solving ability
Flexible to work as part of a team as well as independently
Experience in grant writing and project management will be considered an asset
Experience in water quality monitoring and data collection and management will be considered an asset
Eligibility:
No more than 30 years of age at the start of the internship
Canadian citizens, permanent residents or persons granted refugee status in Canada
Available to work for at least six months
Not currently employed as a paid employee at the host organization
Legally allowed to work according to the relevant provincial and Canadian legislation and regulations
Not receiving employment insurance during their internship
Unemployed or underemployed
