Hiring: Summer Camp and Education Director
Organization: The Whale Camp 
Location: hybrid: in summer, position is on-site on Grand Manan Island, New Brunswick. In off-season, position is remote. 
Hours: summer full-time + winter part-time (see below)

The Whale Camp at the Fundy Marine Science Institute is dedicated to providing place-based, marine biology experiential educational programs about the dynamic marine ecology of the Bay of Fundy as well as the coastal, terrestrial and human ecologies of Grand Manan Island. Our goal is to use hands-on, discovery-oriented marine science activities to increase awareness and understanding of these living systems and by extension the living systems of our oceans and planet.

We seek a highly qualified and specialized individual to fill a camp director position at our residential science, nature, adventure camp. Our program includes whale watching trips, kayaking, and general observation of whales, dolphins, porpoises, seals, puffins, eagles, and a wide variety of seabirds. Our activities and lessons focus largely on the intertidal zones and the dynamic marine and terrestrial ecosystems of the Bay of Fundy. We also offer a college credit program to students wishing to deepen their knowledge and skills in marine science. The Camp Director would be responsible for overseeing the coordination, execution, and documentation of these activities and in supervising and managing staff and campers during the summer. The Camp Director would also manage advertising, registrations, family communications, and program development part-time during the rest of the year (remote).

Requirements: 

This position is a management role requiring significant experience in management and camp programming, demonstrated leadership skills, and strong knowledge of educational pedagogy and ecology. This position is responsible for carrying the vision of camp, including expertise to train staff in field teaching strategies, plant and animal identification, and natural science concepts. The candidate must have at least three years of experience teaching science in informal settings (outside of classroom) using a variety of teaching techniques and confidence to train staff in content and pedagogy. At least two years of management experience is required, including some residential camp management experience.

In the summer, the position is full-time and based at our residential site on Grand Manan Island. Most time will be spent on campus overseeing operations of assistant director, kitchen staff, and teaching staff. Some time will be spent in the field evaluating science and recreation instructors. In the winter, the position is part-time and includes management of the office, advertising, registrations, summer staffing, and program development. This position has the opportunity to grow as Whale Camp grows!

Must have strong organizational background, computer skills, enthusiasm for working with youth and adults in an outdoor setting, ability to motivate others, demonstrated ability to facilitate group dynamics and manage staff in an outdoor camp environment. Must be flexible, patient, have a positive attitude, and sense of humor. CPR / First Aid certification required. Additional wilderness emergency training is highly preferred.

Professional Experience: 
• At least three years science teaching experience in an informal setting (outside of classroom).
• Two years previous management experience required, including some residential camp management experience.
• Some experience with budgeting, advertising, marketing, and social media.

Education: 
• Bachelor's degree in a natural science field, environment, or education required.
• Master’s degree in education, environment, natural sciences, or leadership/management highly preferred.

Responsibilities: Major responsibilities are directing and overseeing all aspects of camp coordination and programming - including but not limited to:

On-season (mid-June - mid-August)
• Manage/supervise program and logistics coordinators, teaching staff, and kitchen staff in a small, dynamic work environment
• Recruit and hire staff
• Train new and returning environmental science instructors and outdoor recreation and dorm instructors in camp procedures, content knowledge, and teaching strategies
• Mentor, evaluate, and lead feedback sessions with program staff throughout the summer
• Implement Whale Camp policies and procedures, modify as needed
• Facilitate group initiatives and team building exercises
• Be a positive role model and mentor for staff and campers
• Maintain and display a positive and encouraging attitude at all times
• Arrange schedule for all daily and evening programs, including daily staff scheduling and days off
• Organize, maintain and update all registration and payments for student and adult programs
• Coordinate, confirm, and monitor trips, programs, and other services with island contractors
• Coordinate all programs, camper dietary restrictions and food allergies with kitchen staff
• Coordinate teaching group lists, medical lists, housing lists and transportation lists
• Prepare travel and transportation days when needed
• Facilitate and lead weekly staff meetings along with logistics coordinator/program director
• Mediate interpersonal or behavioral issues and manage/discipline as needed
• Communicate with parents regarding logistics, payments, and any camper issues
• Develop and practice campus emergency and safety plans; provide first aid for injuries and illnesses as needed
• Assist in lesson planning and teaching with day and evening programming as needed
• Order supplies and equipment for the camp as needed
• Prepare and manage operating budget
• Develop and implement marketing and advertising plan
• Manage social media accounts

Off-Season (late August - early June)
• September - mid-October: office closure and significant time off
• mid-October:10-15 hours/week begin monitoring email, phone, setting dates and prices for upcoming summer, securing contract dates for whale watching, puffins, kayaking, Bangor housing, and vans
• November: 15-20 hours/week - daily monitoring of email and phone, finalize registration, social media and email marketing. Open registration in late November.
• December: 20 hours/week - daily monitoring of email and phone,registration and logistics, social media and email marketing. Advertising planning and some early local advertising
• January: 20 hours/week - daily monitoring of email and phone,registration and logistics, social media and email marketing. Advertising with mix of print, email, social media advertisements
• February: 20 hours/week - daily monitoring of email and phone,registration and logistics, social media and email marketing. Advertising with mix of print, email, social media advertisements. Prepare job descriptions in early February and post by mid-February for March 1 review
• March: 20-30 hours/week - daily monitoring of email and phone,registration and logistics, social media and email marketing. Continue advertising if needed. Focus on hiring team with at least one other staff member. Prepare job offers and assemble team by mid-late March.
• April: 20-30 hours/week: daily monitoring of phone and email, registration nd logistics, social media and emails to family. Focus on communications with families and preparation of camp
• May: 20-30 hours/week: daily monitoring of phone and email, registration and logistics, social media and emails to family as needed. Focus on logistics for first few weeks and staff arrival, connections, and staff training plans
• early June: 40 hours / week: daily monitoring of phone and email, registration and logistics, social media, focus on staff arrival and first few weeks logistics.

Term of Employment: Flexible start date before June 1, 2023, full-time during summer and part-time during off-season, permanent

Language of Work: English

Compensation
• Pay: starts at 50,000/yr (biweekly or monthly)
• Housing and food provided during summer season
• A few whale watching trips, puffin trips and kayaking excursions if schedules permit
• Significant time off and part-time schedule in off-season
