Hiring: Water Quality Project Leader
Organization: Clean Annapolis River Project (CARP)
Location: Annapolis Royal, Annapolis Valley, Nova Scotia

Start date: May 15, 2023
End date: December 31, 2023 (with possibility of extension)
Remuneration: $22.00 per hour plus 4% vacation pay and statutory benefits at 35 hours per week.

CARP is a community based environmental organization in the Annapolis Valley, Nova Scotia. We are driven by our mission to enhance the ecological health of the Annapolis River watershed for current and future generations through science, leadership, and community engagement.

Job Description/Responsibilities:

This position will involve the delivery of CARP’s Natural Infrastructure for Stormwater Management project. Additionally, this position will assist in implementing two water quality monitoring projects including (1) Protecting Coastal Wetlands in Nova Scotia through stewardship and collaboration, and (2) River Guardians.

The main objectives of the Natural Infrastructure (NI) project include implementation of NI projects at multiple sites within southwest Nova Scotia, capacity building among key stakeholders to promote broader application of NI as a tool, the integration of NI demonstration sites into educational programming, and the creation of hands-on engagement opportunities for members of the public.

The project involves engaging and liaising with a broad range of stakeholders, including representatives from municipal and provincial governments, private business, conservation practitioners, private landowners, among others. The ideal candidate will have excellent communication skills and an ability to adapt content to various target audiences. The project leader will be responsible for project planning, delivery, tracking and reporting.

Normal work hours will be 8:30 am – 4:30 pm; early morning or late evening work may be required on occasion. The position will include a mix of office work based out of CARP’s office in Annapolis Royal as well as field-based activities. The position will require access to a personal vehicle, with compensation provided according to the prevailing provincial mileage rate.

Specific tasks may include:
• Implementation of NI at two pre-selected sites (e.g. identifying contractors, sourcing materials, obtaining permits, constructing rain gardens);
• Engaging all relevant stakeholders in NI planning and implementation processes;
• The development of monitoring and evaluation tools (assessment forms, surveys, etc.);
• Field assessments and data collection to support project monitoring and evaluation;
• Planning, delivery, and evaluation of public engagement activities (workshops, seminars, etc.);
• Coordination with the Education and Outreach Program Leader to identify themes for programs/activities, and develop metrics for program tracking and evaluation;
• Conduct wetland assessments and collect data bi-weekly at two pre-selected coastal wetlands;
• Conduct bi-weekly water quality monitoring at 8 sites along the Annapolis River;
• Other activities as needed to accomplish project objectives/outcomes;
• Other activities to support the CARP team as assigned.

Reporting Relationships:

The Water Quality Project Leader will report to the Aquatic Program Manager on matters specific to the delivery of programs/projects and report to the Administration Manager on all HR, contractual reporting deadlines and financial matters (e.g., travel claims, sick days, and vacation). The Water Quality Project Leader works closely and in cooperation with other staff members and in accordance with all CARP policies approved by the Board of Directors. ?The Water Quality Project Leader will have the responsibility of overseeing technical staff working on projects for which they are responsible and will work under the direct management of the Aquatic Program Manager.

Responsibilities of the Employer:
