decide to take on the AIDS pandemic in a personal and creative way.
They
partner with the Alex Gogos, a South African support group for women
raising their AIDS orphaned grandchildren and start providing emotional
and financial support. They build friendships with these women half a
world away. Within two months Wakefield is joined by three additional
groups from Rhode Island, Montreal and BC and when the Stephen Lewis
Foundation launches the Grandmother to Grandmother Campaign the next
year the number grows to 100 groups of women raising funds. A movement
is born as Stephen Lewis says "because the resonance is so great
between
women." The Wakefield Grannies participate in preparation for an
international conference, leading workshops and marching in the streets
of Toronto. Here they are joined by 4 women from the Township, Rose
Letwaba the nurse who started the Gogos in Alex and three Grandmothers,
Magdeline, Lucia and Petronnella. Interest heightens when the whole
group travels to the village which started it all and, surrounded by
crowds and cameras, they forge profound links to each other. A
testament
to the power of individuals to make a difference.
