VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITY

Position: Wood Turtle Monitoring field volunteer
Organization: Clean Annapolis River Project
Website: http://www.annapolisriver.ca/projects_woodturtle.php
Location: Bridgetown, Lawrencetown, Aylesford, Middleton, Kingston, Greenwood, Nova Scotia

Clean Annapolis River Project is currently seeking volunteers for the 2015 wood turtle monitoring field season.

1. Visual Surveys

Field surveys in areas of known or suspected wood turtle habitat to identify new or previously notched turtles. Volunteeres will assist in searing for turtles, taking measurements, completing data cards, etc.

2. Radio Telemetry

A number of turtles in the Annapolis watershed are equipped with radio transmitters. Volunteers will help locate turtles using radiotelemetry and collect data for located turtles.

3. Nest monitoring

During the nesting season CARP will try to monitor sexually mature female turtles in order to identify nest sites. Nest sites will be protected with a mesh enclosure and monitored until hatchling emergence. During the suspected emergence time extensive monitoring will be conducted so that when hatchlings emerge data can be recorded and they can be released.

These postions are a great opportunity for individuals who enjoy spending time outdoors and have a passion for wildlife. It is also a great opportunity for students to gain hands on field experience.

There is no required time comittment and volunteers are welcome to join for a single field session if that is all the time they have available. Ideally a number of volunteers will committ to assist with nest monitoring- as this takes a great deal of time.

No experience needed — training will be provided in the field.
