Position: Junior Environmental Technician<br />
Type: summer job / summer student position<br />

The Junior Environmental Technician will work under the supervision of Clean Annapolis River Project's Program Manger to support the delivery of a variety of environmental programs and projects. The position will provide the opportunity to gain experience with numerous environmental sampling, monitoring, and restoration techniques through assisting with field work, data entry, and GIS mapping related to a variety of CARPs ecological monitoring and restoration projects within the Annapolis watershed. The successful candidate must be able to complete physically demanding outdoor work in varying and unpredictable weather conditions and terrains.<br />
<br />
Specific duties will include:<br />
In-field collection of GIS data (sample locations, habitats, restoration sites etc.) using a hand-held computer (Trimble Juno).<br />
GIS mapping related to various projects (e.g. mapping watershed boundaries, important fish and wildlife habitats, landscape features impacting ecological health, sampling locations etc.).<br />
Aquatic connectivity surveys including fish habitat assessments, and physical restoration work (e.g. debris removal, construction of rock weirs).<br />
Assisting with in-stream habitat quality enhancement activities (e.g. sandwanding).<br />
Assisting in fish habitat suitability assessments.<br />
Riparian and terrestrial habitat enhancement/restoration activities including native tree and shrub planting, willow stake collection, and willow staking.<br />
Field work in various weather conditions (rain, heat, cold), and terrains (forest, wetland, watercourses).<br />
Scientific data entry on field cards, data sheets, and in computer.<br />
Helping to develop and deliver outreach, stewardship and educational activities (e.g. host events, presentations in local schools and groups; help assist junior naturalist club).<br />
Removal of alien invasive vegetation species with hand tools or by hand.<br />
Ecological monitoring of aquatic health parameters using water quality equipment (e.g. temperature, dissolved oxygen, turbidity, pH).<br />
Travel by small boat in watercourses (canoe or aluminum boat with motor).<br />
Assisting in wood turtle research (e.g. turtle surveys, radio telemetry, data entry, stewardship, nest protection).<br />
Attend and participate in project meetings, monthly staff meetings and Board of Directors live update meeting(s).<br />
Equipment maintenance including proper cleaning and storing (e.g. nets, water quality instruments, radio tracking equipment etc.).<br />
Development and/or distribution of brochures or outreach material.<br />
Other field work and office work as required from time to time.<br />

This position is being funded under the Canada Summer Jobs (CSJ) initiative. To be eligible for this position, you must be between 15 and 30 years of age on the start date of the job. You also must have been a full-time student during the previous academic year and be intending to return to full-time studies in the next academic year. You also must be a Canadian citizen, a permanent resident or a refugee under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act. You must also be legally entitled to work according to relevant provincial legislation and regulations.<br />

Qualifications:<br />
<br />
The ideal candidate should be a current student in a post-secondary education program in biology environmental sciences, marine biology or related disciplines. Preference may be given to applicant with prior field work experience who comfortable working outdoors in various weather conditions, including heat, cold and rain. Candidates could be working near or on the water so comfort in a water environment is necessary. Experience using a boat/motor, telemetry equipment, survey equipment, and GOS technology will be considered a strong asset.<br />
