Since 1971, the Ecology Action Centre (EAC) has been working to build a healthier and more sustainable world. While all of our work is connected to Nova Scotia, we draw inspiration from many places. We work closely with communities as well as social and natural scientists and ensure our messages and policy solutions are scientifically defensible. Our current areas of focus include Built Environment, Marine, Coastal and Water, Wilderness, Food, Transportation and Energy.<br />

This position is part of the Coastal and Water Team, whose ultimate goal is for Nova Scotia’s coasts and freshwater to be healthy, valued, and protected.<br />

Position<br />

<br />

The Ecology Action Centre is seeking a Coastal Adaptation Coordinator for a leadership role within our dynamic Coastal and Water Team.<br />

<br />

Our ideal candidate is a campaigner at heart. They are knowledgeable and passionate about Nova Scotia’s coasts and coastal communities, deeply committed to promoting and supporting climate change adaptation efforts, and a clear and confident communicator. A key aspect of this position will be educating decision-makers at the municipal, provincial, and community level about green infrastructure, policy, and technical tools to increase communities’ abilities to adapt to sea level rise. Fundraising to secure continued support for the position is a central part of the role.<br />

The Coastal Adaptation Coordinator reports to the EAC’s staff directors.<br />

<br />

Specific Responsibilities<br />

• Advocate for legislative and regulatory support for Living Shorelines, a Nova Scotia Coastal Act, and other legislative and regulatory measures for coastal protection in Nova Scotia<br />

• Educate decision-makers at multiple levels of government and outside of government about tools and opportunities to adapt to climate change<br />

• Promote Nova Scotia’s need for coastal preparedness for climate change, with a focus on green infrastructure and Living Shorelines approaches<br />

• Develop new projects and campaigns and secure ongoing funding for the position<br />

• Maintain and build relationships with diverse coastal and climate leaders across the province to strategically strengthen our collective ability to create change<br />

• Increase media and social media profile around coastal issues, and climate change adaptation (specifically ecological restoration and green infrastructure approaches) in Nova Scotia<br />

• Complete reports to funders and other stakeholders<br />

General Responsibilities<br />

• Support the general work of the Coastal and Water team, particularly communications, engagement organizing, and promoting our overall ultimate impact<br />

• Engage with volunteers and outside experts to amplify the efforts of the team<br />

• Participate in and support the overall work of the Ecology Action Centre<br />

• Other tasks, as required<br />

<br />

Qualifications Required<br />

• Proven skills as a relationship builder and change maker; able to provide facilitation and leadership on complex environmental issues, build coalitions, and work effectively with diverse stakeholders and community organizations<br />

• Strong knowledge of coastal ecology, coastal issues, ecological restoration approaches, in particular living shorelines or coastal geomorphology, geology, biology, or planning<br />

• Well versed in climate change impacts and adaptation as they relate to Nova Scotia and the Maritimes<br />

• A passion for coastal and climate change issues and a determination to make change<br />

• Excellent communication skills: working with the public, speaking, writing, delivering presentations to various audiences<br />

• Proven ability to work with multiple levels of government<br />

• Demonstrated ability to develop outreach and education materials and presentations<br />

• Media savvy with superlative social media acumen<br />

• Ability to work independently and effectively manage multiple tasks and prioritize, while maintaining a functional and narrative connection to EAC’s Water Coordinator and EAC as a whole<br />

• Experience with fundraising, proposal writing, and project management<br />

• Persistent, diplomatic, creative, optimistic, with a team-oriented approach<br />

• Willing to work occasional evenings and weekends and willing to travel within the Maritimes<br />

<br />

Desirable Qualifications<br />

• Familiarity with climate change adaptation initiatives in the region<br />

• Experience working with NGOs and community organizations<br />

• Experience with engagement organizing, storytelling and/or development evaluation<br />

• Hands on fieldwork or restoration experience<br />

• Experience with contact management databases<br />

Start Date: September 2016<br />

<br />

Terms of Employment: 30-37.5 hours per week at between $21-23/hour; 4 weeks of paid vacation; cost shared benefits plan; initial contract for one year, with option to renew based on funding availability.<br />

Location: Halifax, Nova Scotia in EAC’s wonderful green office – one of the most energy efficient office buildings in Canada!<br />
