The COINAtlantic Secretariat seeks to employ for a one year term a qualified person to fill the position of Project Officer. Candidates should send a resume and a cover letter that outlines how they meet the qualifications listed below to:<br />

The Atlantic Coastal Zone Information Steering Committee (ACZISC) was established in January 1992 to foster cooperation in Atlantic Canada with regard to Integrated Coastal and Ocean Management (ICOM), coastal mapping and geomatics. This year (2016) the ACZISC is transitioning its brand to the Coastal and Ocean Information Network Atlantic (COINAtlantic).<br />
<br />
COINAtlantic is Actively:<br />
Networking and disseminating information via meetings and thematic workshops, the Coastal Update e-newsletter and the COINAtlantic website.<br />
Participating in studies and projects to further our understanding of the coastal zone.<br />
Developing web-based tools to facilitate the discovery and sharing of data to support the management of the coastal zone.<br />
<br />
COINAtlantic holds two meetings per year in the Atlantic provincial capitals by rotation. In addition it organizes thematic workshops and webinars as required. The meetings and workshops are attended by members of the Integrated Coastal and Ocean Management Community of Practice and by observers from all sectors, including government agencies, community groups, the private sector, academia, etc.<br />
<br />
The COINAtlantic Secretariat is composed of a half-time Director, a full time Project Officer, (this position), and a part time Finance Officer. This advertisement seeks to employ a full time Project Officer for a term of one year replacing the incumbent who will be on maternity leave. A period of overlap is anticipated to allow for the training of the successful applicant. Preference will be given to qualified candidates who can make themselves available part-time for training starting 19 September 2016. Full time employment is anticipated to commence in October 2016.<br />
<br />
The primary role of the Project Officer is to support the Director of the COINAtlantic Secretariat in the development, implementation and promotion of COINAtlantic activities.<br />
<br />
Specific duties and responsibilities of the Project Officer include:<br />
Develop and maintain the COINAtlantic website, and monitor website usage and statistics;<br />
Prepare and disseminate the monthly COINAtlantic Coastal Update newsletter;<br />
Develop and maintain the distribution list for the COINAtlantic Coastal Update newsletter;<br />
Participate in the preparation of the strategic plan, workplan and budget;<br />
Participate in the organization and delivery of conferences, workshops and meetings;<br />
Prepare and disseminate minutes of meetings;<br />
Participate in the preparation of reports;<br />
Attend meetings as required;<br />
Maintain project and program records;<br />
Participate in the preparation of promotional and presentation material;<br />
Participate in the delivery of contracts;<br />
Network with complementary organizations; and,<br />
Other related duties.<br />
<br />
The position is compensated at $35,000 / year based upon a 35 hour work week. The work location is on the campus of Dalhousie University in Halifax. There are 15 days of paid annual leave, paid leave for holidays as prescribed by human resources at Dalhousie University and parking on the Dalhousie University Campus if needed.<br />

Qualifications:<br />

Education:<br />
<br />
The candidate should have Bachelors of Science degree in a discipline relevant to the job, including but not exclusive of biology, earth science, or oceanography. A Masters degree in a relevant discipline is an asset.<br />
<br />
Knowledge:<br />
Knowledge of the coastal and ocean sector, its stakeholders, and the roles and mandates of agencies, government departments and organizations;<br />
Knowledge of Marine Spatial Planning, ocean and coastal management, marine sciences, and spatial data management and analysis;<br />
An understanding of the linkages between ocean and coastal management and spatial data management and analysis;<br />
Knowledge of the issues and opportunities related to the coasts and oceans of Atlantic Canada; and,<br />
Knowledge of information technologies used for communication, including social media platforms, and website content management systems.<br />
<br />
Experience:<br />
Communicating through newsletters, social media, and websites;<br />
Organizing and providing logistical support to face to face meetings and workshops. Experience organizing and conducting virtual meetings and / or video editing is an asset;<br />
Maintaining effective professional relationships with a wide range of persons and organizations. Previous experience contributing to sustaining a network is an asset;<br />
Experience managing an office, schedules and maintaining records; and,<br />
Experience maintaining a website and monitoring usage and conducting simple system website maintenance procedures. Experience using a content management system is an asset.<br />
<br />
Personal Suitability:<br />
The ability to work effectively within a small team but capable of working independently because this is the only full time position within the Secretariat and sometimes the only person in the office;<br />
The ability to problem solve both with technology e.g. websites, mailing lists and relationships with people or organizations;<br />
The ability to conduct research, principally on-line, for relevant information, and review, analyse, and summarize the results of the research; and,<br />
Effective oral and written communication.<br />
