The power of youth to shape and transform the world is clear. Canadian youth benefit from their diversity advantage, education, and energy. Canada’s government has acted to restore our place on environmental stewardship and climate action — what our youth don’t have is work. High rates of un- and underemployment results in short and long-term economic damage, lowered self-confidence and squanders the significant investment young people, their families, schools and government have made.

UNA-Canada has responded with Canada Green Corps (CGC). This innovative results-focused initiative will strategically fulfill government commitments to provide new opportunities for youth and showcase national leadership on climate action. UNA-Canada, a respected and successful youth serving and training & deploying national organization proposes to ladder up from 20 years of success and from the GOC’s Youth Employment Strategy to create CGC that will:
• Bridge talented un- or underemployed youth to meaningful employment through work-integrated learning and disciplined support.
• Strategic six-month placements working with government, private sector, First Nations, institutions, universities and other partner organizations to ignite Canada’s green economy.
• Partner organizations will receive a wage subsidy to host CGC participants during their six-month employment.
• Peer-to-peer knowledge and skills transfer through “Innovation Teams” consisting of CGC participants across Canada and UNA-Canada’s international UN interns.
• Contribute to Canada’s commitments on climate & environment (UNFCCC & SDGs).
• Innovate through youth-to-youth micro-investment in clean tech and community projects; building a culture of innovation and accelerating a clean energy future.

About

CGC is UNA-Canada’s innovative new youth employment programme designed to bridge talented, yet un-and underemployed, Canadian youth to meaningful employment to ignite Canada’s green economy. CGC participants will undertake four or six-month work-integrated learning placements with various companies, governments, associations, universities and civil society organizations across Canada, but particularly our cities of focus: Vancouver, Whitehorse, Calgary, Edmonton, Toronto, Ottawa, Montreal and Halifax. CGC participants may assist their employer organizations and communities in reducing their environmental footprint and increasing sustainability. Additionally, CGC participants may engage their communities over the course of their placements. CGC participants may also identify and address environmental “quick wins” in their communities and workplaces.
