Position: FOUND Fridays Harvest Coordinator
Organization: FOUND Forgotten Food
Location: Halifax, Nova Scotia

About FOUND Forgotten Food

FOUND strives to reduce food waste by gathering and sharing forgotten fruits and vegetables in Halifax, NS. We source our food from local producers, farmers’ markets, and even the trees around us that otherwise wouldn’t end up on our plates.

All too often, foods that are considered ‘imperfect’ are left in the field to rot, and ripe produce at farmers’ markets is thrown away due to short shelf life. To help address this problem, FOUND collects this forgotten food and donates a part of each fresh harvest to local food banks and shelters, with the remaining being offered wholesale to local cafes and restaurants. Food that isn’t distributed immediately is transformed by FOUND into shelf-stable preserves and other goods that are sold at local markets and shops.

During our first year, FOUND harvested 3,242 pounds of fresh, local produce that would have otherwise been wasted, and instead shared that food with various community groups throughout Halifax.

In 2016, FOUND started the FOUND Fridays program to allow residents of Halifax and Dartmouth to easily donate excess produce by signing up their donation online (e.g. 20 tomatoes and 4 cucumbers) and then leaving their donation on their front porch for volunteer pickup on Friday mornings. (Please note that depending on the candidates schedule, the weekly donation time can easily change should Friday mornings be a conflict.)

The FOUND Fridays Harvest Coordinator duties include:
• Planning and picking up food on a weekly basis in late spring/summer/early fall:
• Monitoring online donation sign-ups on a regular basis
• Mapping out best route for pickups
• Weighing and recording weight and type of produce for all donations, and updating FOUND's Harvest Tracking Excel sheet on a weekly basis
• Must have access to a vehicle (gas money reimbursed at $0.33 per km)
• Communicating with Co-Directors to organize where food will be donated/sold
• Working with Communciations Coorindator to actively advertise for donations for urban garden owners
• Taking pictures of donations during pickups for use on FOUND's social media channels
• Writing short, bi-weekly blog posts for the FOUND website (i.e., information on urban edibles, food issues, FOUND events/successes, etc.)
• Attending bi-weekly Core Member meetings and assisting with other tasks/events when possible

Desired skills and experience:
• Passionate about food issues, reducing food waste, and sustainability
• Strong communication and organization skills
• Enthusiasm and outgoing personality to apply to networking with farmers' markets, farmers, and local business owners
• Access to a vehicle

This position is approximately 5-10 hours / week. FOUND strongly believes in skill-building, and our goal with volunteers is to provide an environment in which existing skills are utilized and valued but alsowhere new skills can be developed.
