Position: Fisheries Scientist<br />
Organization: Oceana Canada<br />
Location: Oceana Canada offices in Halifax, Ottawa and Toronto. Candidates based in other locations in Canada may be considered.<br />

Summary<br />

Oceana Canada, an independent charity established to restore Canadian oceans to be as rich, healthy, and abundant as they once were, is proud to be affiliated with the international family of Oceana organizations. Oceana Canada works with civil society, academics, fishers, and government to return Canada’s formerly vibrant oceans to health. We engage in fact-based campaigns designed to preserve the bounty of the sea as a source for wild-caught fish, as well as to preserve the marine ecosystem for our own and future generations.<br />
<br />
Oceana Canada seeks a Fisheries Scientist to play a critical role in support of its campaigns. The Fisheries Scientist, reporting to the Director of Science, plays a key role in, and may have primary responsibility for, preparing technical reports and developing the scientific foundation for our work on fisheries and other marine conservation campaigns. The position requires a combination of strong research, critical thinking and communication skills.<br />
<br />
Principal duties and responsibilities<br />
• Write, edit, and prepare reports with meticulous attention to detail. Draft science-based policy recommendations.<br />
• Research and review topics related to fisheries and marine conservation to inform and support the goals and strategies of Oceana Canada’s campaigns.<br />
• Critique Canadian fisheries policy decisions, including participation in external fisheries science and management meetings.<br />
• Interpret and synthesize technical information relevant to campaign goals and objectives, on an ongoing basis.<br />
• Keep up to date on best practices, scientific methodologies and innovations concerning the conservation and sustainable management of marine fisheries.<br />
• Develop a strong network of scientists and personal expertise in fisheries management.<br />
• Contribute as a member of national and international teams to support Oceana’s mission to “Save the Oceans, Feed the World”.<br />
• Perform additional duties as needed or assigned.<br />
• Must be willing to accept a varied workload. Some long hours, weekend events, alternative hours to accommodate international time zones and travel, including participation in at-sea Expeditions.<br />
• Must have the ability to handle many tasks simultaneously in a dynamic work environment with speed, accuracy, and a positive attitude; show initiative, and exhibit insightful planning and execution of responsibilities.<br />
• Must maintain strict confidentiality in working with sensitive information, and possess excellent judgment in handling communications, expenses, personal relationships and representing Oceana Canada in a professional manner.<br />

Requirements<br />
• Graduate degree in a relevant Science discipline with practical experience in fisheries science, conservation and marine biology.<br />
• Extensive knowledge of Canadian fisheries, science and management.<br />
• Excellent writing, editing, communication and research skills required.<br />
• Ability to interpret, build and analyze large datasets.<br />
• Organized working style with attention to detail.<br />
• Fluency in French will be considered an asset.<br />
• The successful candidate must be available for full-time work in Canada.<br />
