Position: Wilderness Outreach Officer – Halifax (recent graduate)<br />

Organization: Ecology Action Centre (EAC)<br />

Location: Halifax, Nova Scotia<br />

We are seeking a recent graduate who is passionate about nature conservation and skilled at event organizing and communications. The Wilderness Outreach Officer will assist in various aspects of our campaigns to designate new parks and protected areas and to improve/reform forestry practices. Duties will include planning and executing events to engage and inspire support for our mission, including a large, citizen-science Bioblitz event in the late summer of 2017. Duties will also focus heavily on digital/Internet communications and direct outreach to groups and citizens in order to grow our network of volunteers and allies across the province and the Wilderness Issues Committee at EAC. In particular the office will develop and maintain multiple internet-based social media and list serve channels in support of our campaigns. The Officer will report to the Senior Wilderness Coordinator and will liaise with EAC’s Wilderness Issues Committee (WIC).<br />

The Wilderness Communication and Outreach Officer duties will include:<br />

• Participating in direct outreach and engagement with community groups and individual members of the public to help grow 1) the Wilderness Issues Committee (WIC) and 2) our network of dedicated volunteers/allies across the province.<br />

• Leading the event planning and logistics for a large, high profile Bioblitz citizen-science event in the late summer of 2017.<br />

• Planning and executing special events designed to grow membership in the WIC and participation in our conservation campaign objectives (e.g. indoor speaking events, outdoor hikes, fundraising, events etc.).<br />

• Developing and maintaining a strong, multi-channel social media platform and web presence to support our various campaigns and objectives.<br />

• Developing campaign materials and graphics for online and occasional print use.<br />

• Attending inside and outside meetings and events on behalf of the EAC Wilderness Team in order to support and grow our network of members and allies.<br />

• Research and writing (e.g. primarily for, web content and social media posts, also reports to funders, grant applications, etc.).<br />

• Assisting in ongoing fundraising to support the position and our campaigns.<br />

• General campaign assistance to the Senior Wilderness Coordinator as needed.<br />

Due to funding criteria, applicants must have successfully completed a post-secondary program within a year of their application for this position. (Please see canlearn.ca for a list of eligible post-secondary institutions. Look for “list of designated educational institutions”.)<br />

<br />

Required skills and experience:<br />

• A passion for protecting nature, wildlife and the environment.<br />

• Strong social media acumen. Ability to develop and support multiple social media channels in support of campaign objectives.<br />

• Proven ability to organize and execute public and/or stakeholder events.<br />

• Experience facilitating events and meetings.<br />

• Excellent writing skills.<br />

• Comfortable speaking and participating in public and stakeholder group meetings.<br />

• Great people skills, including a proven ability to navigate contentious issues with a persistent and diplomatic approach.<br />

• Hands-on experience with nature interpretation, experiential wilderness education, or forestry.<br />

• Strong time management and organizational skills, including event logistics.<br />

• Able to work independently as well as part of a team.<br />

• Willingness to travel within NS.<br />

Desirable skills and experience:<br />

• Natural science background/degree<br />

• Graphic design and web design experience.<br />

• Experience with multi-stakeholder events.<br />

• Experience with Bioblitz events<br />

• Experience with campaigns for social or environmental change.<br />

• Non-profit work or volunteer experience.<br />

• Experience working with First Nations.<br />

• Familiarity with engagement organizing approaches.<br />

• Familiarity with developmental evaluation approaches.<br />

• Politically savvy.<br />

Terms of Employment<br />

<br />

37.5 hours per week, some evening and weekend work will be required. 4 weeks paid vacation and a cost-shared benefits program. Salary $39,000 per annum.<br />

This position is for a term of 2 years with the possibility of an extension pending the success of the program and fundraising efforts.<br />
