Halifax Regional Municipality is inviting applications for the casual full-time position of Residential Camp Cook in Parks & Recreation. This position would be working with a Head Cook who is returningn to the position. Successful applicants will be responsible for planning, organizing, and cooking meals for participants at the Adventure Earth Centre’s residential camps. Menus are set according to traditional program needs and objectives, are youth-friendly, sustainable, and budget-conscious. On-site accommodations and meals during program times only are provided.<br />
<br />
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:<br />
• Planning, preparing and serving meals and snacks for groups of 35-65 participants and staff in a residential camp setting<br />
• Ensuring meals and snacks are nutritious, high quality, appealing, and appropriate for all participants being served, including individuals with specific dietary needs (i.e. diabetic, vegetarian, allergies, etc.)<br />
• Maintaining purchasing records, inventory, and food budgets<br />
• Overseeing and ensuring all food handling and health & safety standards are maintained at all times<br />
• Procurement of food (placing orders, managing deliveries, shopping for and picking up groceries and supplies, etc.,<br />
• Completing all dishes and full kitchen clean up related to food preparation (cooks are not responsible for staff or campers’ personal dishes)<br />
• Working as a team with a second cook to complete all tasks<br />
<br />
Education and Experience:<br />
• Current Food Handlers Certificate<br />
• Must hold a valid Class 5 driver’s licence<br />
• Experience in large volume cooking<br />
• Applicants must be willing to obtain WHMIS training<br />
• Applicants must be willing to attend all orientations/training sessions (dates to be determined)<br />
<br />
Technical / Job Specific Knowledge and Abilities:<br />
• First Aid Certification an asset<br />
• Experience in camp cooking/camp life an asset<br />
• Experience in modifying menus to meet specific needs an asset<br />
• Experience working with youth an asset<br />
• Kitchen management experience an asset<br />
• Access to a reliable vehicle an asset<br />
<br />
Security Clearance Requirements: Applicants must complete screening through the Child Abuse Registry and a Criminal Record Check with Vulnerable Sector Check<br />
<br />
Please note – Testing may be conducted as a component of the selection process to assess technical and job specific knowledge. Candidates, who are selected for testing, may be tested in a group setting, scheduled at the employer’s discretion.<br />

Please note – Transportation to and from camp is the candidates responsibility. Mileage will be compensated.<br />

WORK STATUS: Casual Seasonal. June 26th, 2017 to August 6th, 2017<br />
<br />
HOURS OF WORK: 320 hours between June 26 and August 6, 2017. These hours include training and preparation time before camp in addition to the onsite hours at camp. Camp dates are as follows:<br />

LEAD: July 3 – 9, 2017<br />
SunShip: July 12 – 20 and July 23 – 28, 2017<br />
YES! Camp: August 2 – 4, 2017<br />
H.E.A.T. Camp August 4 – 6, 2017<br />
<br />
SALARY: Non-Union. $13.00-$15.00 per hour (plus 4% vacation pay).<br />
<br />
WORK LOCATION: Adventure Earth Centre, 68 Parkhill Rd, Halifax, NS (training only) and Camp Mockingee, 160 Smeltzer Rd, Windsor, NS.<br />
