Position: Fisheries Technician<br />
Organization: Clean Annapolis River Project<br />

End date: December 1, 2017, with possibility for extension<br />

Remuneration: $16.00 per hour plus 4% vacation pay and statutory benefits at 35 hours per week.<br />

Eligibility<br />
<br />
The applicant should be a graduate from a post-secondary or college program in sciences such as natural resources, fisheries, ecology, biology, engineering or a related discipline OR have 3 years of relevant ecological, engineering or fisheries work experience. The applicant must have access to a reliable vehicle for field work related to this position. Travel mileage will be compensated according to prevailing CARP policy at approx. $0.43/km. Electrofishing certification, experience working with salmonids and ecological/fish habitat field work are considered strong assets.<br />

Job Description/Responsibilities:<br />

The Fisheries Technician works under the direction of the Program Manager in a supportive and cooperative team environment. The Fisheries Technician will be expected to complete duties directly related to CARP day to day activities in order to fulfill stewardship, ecological enhancement and ecological monitoring project requirements as they relate to aquatic connectivity (culvert assessments and remedial actions for fish passage), fish habitat and fish population management.<br />

The successful candidate will be required to report to our office at 314 St. George St. Annapolis Royal each working day. Field work is conducted in the Annapolis River watershed with the possibility of some meetings or workshops outside of the watershed. The Fisheries Technician is expected to conduct field work as needed in various weather conditions and field conditions. The Fisheries Technician will also be expected to spend time in the office entering data and conducting scientific reporting requirements as directed by the Program Manager.<br />

Specific tasks can include:<br />
Lead the process of prioritization, selection, restoration planning, and notification of work to regulatory bodies related to barrier culvert restorations in the Annapolis River watershed<br />
Lead fish passage restoration work on selected watercourse crossings, and instream fish habitat restoration (e.g. digger log installation, sandwanding) work as directed by CARP management.<br />
Lead all aquatic connectivity surveys (using survey level, rod, and tripod equipment), fish habitat assessments, restoration recommendations and physical restoration (e.g. debris removal, tail water control structures, fish chute installations) on culverts to ensure aquatic connectivity.<br />
Help train CARP field assistants or other volunteers on aquatic connectivity surveys and field work.<br />
Assist in ecological monitoring of aquatic health parameters (e.g. temperature, dissolved oxygen, turbidity, pH) when required using appropriate field methods and equipment (provided).<br />
Complete, review and update fish habitat assessments and management plans for salmonids including such information and data as water quality, aquatic connectivity, invasive species management, and natural and anthropogenic threats.<br />
Participate in monthly staff meetings and prepare monthly summary reports for the Board of Directors.<br />
Scientific data entry and report writing.<br />
Help deliver outreach, stewardship and educational activities (e.g. host events, presentations in local schools and groups) as directed by CARP management.<br />
Liaise with CARPs partners and fulfill reporting requirements for funding contract(s) in place.<br />
Other field work or work in the office or watershed as directed by CARP management.<br />
