ABOUT THE POSITION<br />

Outward Bound Canada’s programs for Indigenous youth and young adults combine the philosophy of Outward Bound with the values and teachings reflected in Canadian Indigenous cultures and communities. For more than 25 years, Outward Bound Canada has worked with various Indigenous communities and organizations to help develop inspiring and valuable programs. Outward Bound’s programs for Indigenous youth and adults are guided by the following principles:<br />

• Culturally Grounded: built on the particular cultural strengths, traditions and values of the communities we serve.<br />
• Capacity Building: create lasting value and build capacity for our community partners.<br />
• Deep Collaboration: we aspire to build authentic partnerships that support the long-term development goals of Indigenous communities.<br />

OBC recently received multi-year funding support to significantly expand our Indigenous programming nationally. This support will enable OBC to impact more Indigenous youth through leadership development programs, career and skills development opportunities, and by providing us with the capacity to deepen our partnerships with Indigenous peoples, groups and organizations in Canada.<br />
<br />
To lead this national initiative, we are hiring a full-time Indigenous Program Manager. This individual will oversee program development and implementation of Outward Bound Canada’s National Indigenous Leadership program strategy. This includes cultivating partnerships and engaging Canadian Indigenous communities across Canada, recruiting participants and the development of culturally relevant programming within the OBC curricula. This is an extraordinary opportunity for someone who is highly motivated and compassionate with a profound commitment to supporting the development aspirations of Indigenous peoples across Canada. The Indigenous Program Manager will be the public face and ambassador for this program.<br />
<br />
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES<br />
• Build and maintain effective relationships with Indigenous communities, organizations and partners across Canada.<br />
• Develop meaningful and culturally relevant program curriculum and training materials.<br />
• Support Program Directors in the hiring and support of Indigenous instructors.<br />
• Oversee culturally relevant training for instructors and team members working with Indigenous students.<br />
• Recruit students and provide support to their families and communities throughout the admissions process.<br />
• Recruit and engage program volunteers, Elders and other cultural resource people to ensure effective and respectful program design and delivery.<br />
• Develop and maintain relationships with delivery partners, key clients, land managers and other stakeholders as necessary to ensure high quality program delivery.<br />
• Support the Philanthropy Department in identifying and engaging new funding partners and with the ongoing stewardship of these partners and donors.<br />
• Work with the other departments within the organization to oversee and ensure communications and outreach related to the National Indigenous Leadership Program; including student recruitment and intake, development of marketing and communication tools, and managing public and media relations.<br />
<br />
DESIRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE <br />
• Strong working knowledge of the outdoor and experiential/adventure industry along with a deep understanding of and commitment to the Outward Bound philosophy and pedagogy.<br />
• Extensive experience working with Indigenous populations and a broad familiarity with Indigenous cultural and community perspectives across Canada. They are likely to have a broad range of existing Indigenous community connections and relationships.<br />
• Have an understanding of the range of issues facing Indigenous youth across Canada.<br />
• Detail oriented: excellent planning, organizational, communication, and system building skills.<br />
• Have excellent interpersonal and people management skills.<br />
• Solution-focused; able to take responsibility and work unsupervised.<br />
• Technologically savvy with a high level of computer competency; experience with MS Office programs (particularly Word, PowerPoint and Excel), Google Suites, Database/CRM’s (Salesforce is an asset).<br />
• Background in social work &/or education - specifically in working with Indigenous Communities would be an asset.<br />
• Wilderness First Aid/Advanced Wilderness First Aid (+80hrs) certification & CPR-C – or willing to complete.<br />
• Class 4 Driver’s License (asset).<br />
• Current teaching certificate (asset).<br />
• Must be fluent in English: fluency in Indigenous language is an asset.<br />
• Must obtain a Police Vulnerable Sector check<br />
• This position will require a flexible work schedule and will require travel from time to time to/from our program regions in BC, Rocky Mountains, Northern Ontario and New Brunswick.<br />
