Position: Wilderness Outreach Officer (full-time)<br />

ORGANIZATION<br />

The Ecology Action Centre (EAC) is an environmental charity based in Nova Scotia. We take leadership on critical environmental issues from biodiversity protection to climate change to environmental justice. We are grounded in community and are a strong voice and watchdog for our environment. We work to catalyze change through policy advocacy, community development, and building awareness. We take a holistic approach to the environment and our economy to create a just and sustainable society.<br />

EACs Wilderness Team works to conserve biodiversity in Nova Scotia by advancing a network of legally protected areas linked with ecologically-healthy working forests. Our campaigns promote better forestry, less clearcutting, and other conservation measures that will help protect wildlife and nature. We work with a committee of volunteers to cultivate a culture of nature appreciation and engagement with wilderness issues across the province.<br />

POSITION<br />
<br />
The EACs Wilderness Team is seeking a Wilderness Outreach Officer who is passionate about nature conservation and skilled at event organizing and communications. The Wilderness Outreach Officer will assist in various aspects of our campaigns to designate new parks and protected areas, to improve or reform forestry practices, and to engage volunteers and allies.<br />

Specific Responsibilities:<br />
Working to raise the profile of wilderness and forestry issues, grow the Wilderness Action Committee, increase participation in our conservation campaign objectives, and strengthen our network of dedicated volunteers/allies across the province, by:<br />
Participating in direct outreach and engagement with community groups and individual members of the public;<br />
Planning and executing special events (e.g. speaking events, hikes, fundraisers, etc.);<br />
Organizing and conducting inside and outside meetings and events on behalf of the EAC Wilderness Team;<br />
Facilitating and supporting coalitions and other groups where EAC holds a leadership role.<br />
Research and writing of both internal and external communications including press releases, web content and social media posts.<br />
Developing campaign materials and graphics for online and print use.<br />
Project administration duties, including but not limited to funder reporting, budget management, and proposal writing.<br />
Participating in and supporting the overall work of the Ecology Action Centre and the Wilderness Team, including but not limited to community queries, project strategizing, engagement organizing, and promoting our overall impact.<br />

REQUIRED SKILLS & EXPERIENCE<br />
<br />
General<br />
A passion for protecting nature, wildlife and the environment.<br />
Strong interest in and knowledge of wilderness issues, in particular biodiversity and nature conservation and/or sustainable forestry as they relate to Nova Scotia and Atlantic Canada.<br />
<br />
Organization and Coordination <br />
Experience organizing and facilitating events and meetings, including public engagement and/or stakeholder events.<br />
Experience coordinating or working with teams of volunteers.<br />
<br />
Communication and Relationship Building<br />
Excellent communication skills: public speaking, writing, delivering presentations to various audiences, and participating in group meetings.<br />
Proven skills as a relationship builder: building coalitions, facilitating collaborations, and/or working effectively with diverse stakeholders and community organizations<br />
<br />
Project Management<br />
Project management skills: ability to effectively manage multiple tasks, meet project deadlines & deliverables, and manage project budgets.<br />
Ability to work in a dynamic, fast-paced environment, independently and as part of a team.<br />
Strong organizational skills, initiative, and a diplomatic, creative, and optimistic approach to complex issues.<br />

Other<br />
Willing to work occasional evenings and weekends.<br />
Willing to travel within NS.<br />
<br />
DESIRABLE SKILLS & EXPERIENCE:<br />
Experience with campaign planning and execution, particularly campaigns for social or environmental change.<br />
Experience working with governments on policy matters.<br />
Experience working and/or volunteering in a non-profit organization.<br />
Experience with engagement organizing, storytelling and/or developmental evaluation.<br />
Valid drivers license.<br />
<br />
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT <br />
<br />
Ideal Start Date: May 24th, 2018 for a week of transition with current Wilderness Outreach Officer.<br />
<br />
Full-time: 37.5 hours per week. Salary $19.50 - $21.50/hour. 4 weeks of paid vacation; cost-shared benefits plan; initial contract for one year, with option to renew based on funding availability.<br />
<br />
Hours: Monday to Friday variable hours. Some evening and weekend work will be required.<br />
<br />
Location: This position will be based at EACs office, 2705 Fern Lane, Halifax.<br />
