Position: Farm Manager
Organization: Watershed Farm Project
Location: Baker Settlement, South Shore, Nova Scotia (near Bridgewater)
Housing: on-site housing is negotiable

Watershed Farm is seeking a Farm Manager(s) who will work alongside us as we evolve both as a working mixed-use farm and as the foundation of a four month long educational experience for young adults.

Watershed Farm has been a mixed livestock and vegetable farm for close to twenty years. Located on the beautiful South Shore of Nova Scotia, we are situated on a drumlin hilltop and surrounded by 250 acres of Acadian forest. Out of 18 cleared acres, we presently have 1.5 acres under cultivation as a market garden. The property includes a number of animal shelters, a small orchard, two root cellars, two greenhouses, a tractor shed, a winter barn for animals, two caterpillar tunnels, an irrigation system, a tractor and many hand and power tools. We are also equipped with a wind generator and solar panels.

We currently have a laying flock of 15 hens. However, with more than 18 acres of prime pasture and meadow along with two irrigation ponds, we are eager to rebuild our sheep flock and to consider introducing cows. Our small apiary continues to grow as do the products we offer from the apiary.

At Watershed Farm, we are proud of our long history of serving the community through farmers’ markets, a CSA and donations of food to local community organizations. We incorporate Biodynamic and organic methods in our farming practice and have expanded our perennial crops to include fruits, nuts, berries, asparagus and an extensive array of herbs.

Education has always been an important part of what we do at Watershed Farm and over the years we have hosted a full array of public events, concerts, workshops and school field trips. We are currently looking to the future and developing a semester-long international residential program for young adults that would begin next growing season with a Pilot Project Year and move into a full launch in 2020. The Watershed Farm Project will promote life skills, entrepreneurship and civic engagement through immersion in all of the practicalities of farm and rural life, as well as a full complement of community service projects.

The successful applicant(s) for the position of Farm Manager(s) will assume all farming responsibilities for the upcoming growing season including the obligation to provide food for up to 10 participants in the Watershed Farm Pilot Project Year. Basic groundskeeping work will also be expected such as mowing and general upkeep.

The Farm Manager(s) will need to be comfortable instructing and supervising Watershed Farm Program participants as they learn how to sow, weed, harvest, irrigate and care for the plants and animals during their residency. Additionally, the 1.5 acre market garden currently under cultivation has the potential to provide produce far in excess of the needs of the Watershed Farm Project and this contract. The Farm Manager(s) will be encouraged to consider growing for local farmer’s markets and restaurants to supplement the salary they will be offered.

The position will begin in February 2019 with seed ordering and garden planning. While we would see the first year as a discrete contract that ends in January 2020, ideally we are looking for a candidate who is open to establishing a long-term relationship with Watershed Farm and the educational project we are developing. A farming couple or family would also be most welcome.

Applicants should be in sound physical health and capable of working outdoors in variable weather conditions. Commitment to organic farming is a necessity and experience in Biodynamic methods would be a welcome addition.

Practical knowledge of the use of farm tools including hand tools, tillers, irrigation systems, tractors and mowers would be required. A minimum of two years managing a diverse market garden and basic animal husbandry skills are also required.

As well, applicants will have a willingness to work with and appreciate the benefits of the educational aspects of the Watershed Farm Project. Salary will be commensurate with experience. On-site housing is negotiable.
