Position: Environmental Educator
Term: May to late June 2019 (see below)
Organization: Environmental Education Commission
Location: Deer Park area of Salmonier Line, Avalon Peninsula, Newfoundland

The Environmental Education Commission is seeking an environmental educator to join the team teaching the Brother Brennan Environmental Education Centre’s spring and fall school programs.

The Brother Brennan Centre is a camp located in the Newfoundland wilderness of the Avalon Peninsula’s beautiful ‘Fog Forest’. The Centre hosts school groups in spring and fall for 2 day / 1 night overnight trips during which they are immersed in activities designed to get them outdoors, close to nature and making their school learning come to life in the real world. The environmental educators are teaching about climate change, biodiversity, ecosystems, ‘wilderness survival’, food sustainability, orienteering and more as well as running evening programs with a night hike, storytelling and campfire. There is also some supervision and snack preparation and clean-up needed.

To maintain the quality of the program we need a person who:
• Has demonstrated ability and likes to work with children
• Has an interest and knowledge in ecology, sustainability and the environment (university degree in a related field would be an asset)
• Enjoys being active and is comfortable in a wilderness setting
• Works well in a team environment
• Is adaptable, motivated, hardworking and caring

Initially the position is from early May to late June 2019, with chance of renewal in fall and following years. Each week there is usually one shift of two consecutive days with a requirement to stay overnight.

Pay is initially $14.85 an hour with 23 hours in a shift. Occasionally there will be a second shift in a week. Meals are provided. The successful candidate will need a valid first aid certificate and a police record check with vulnerable sector check. Own transport is preferred, but we always try to carpool.

To apply please send a resume and cover letter explaining why you are a good candidate and whether you have other assets that may be helpful for the job e.g. ability to teach in French or play music for singalongs at the campfire. Send your application to helenspencer@nlesd.ca before April 11, 2019
