We take leadership on critical environmental issues from biodiversity protection to climate change to environmental justice. We are grounded in community, and a strong voice and watchdog for our environment. We work to catalyze change though policy advocacy, community development and building awareness. About the EACs Built Environment Committee<br />
<br />
The Built Environment Committee (BEC) encourages ecologically sustainable, affordable and healthy building design and construction, and promotes urban planning and design in harmony with the natural and social environment. We work together with like-minded groups to initiate and support positive enhancements to the built environment in Halifax and across Nova Scotia. We promote sustainable urban growth with equitable access to amenities and safe, affordable housing for all citizens; protected natural ecosystems and watersheds; reliable public transit; energy-efficient building construction; and the protection of heritage and cultural assets.<br />

POSITION<br />
<br />
The Ecology Action Centre is seeking a Sustainable Cities Coordinator. Working with other organizations in Halifax, this person will actively support the implementation of the Green Network Plan, and advocate for sustainable regional planning and a vibrant, affordable city. Our ideal candidate is a campaigner at heart. They are knowledgeable and passionate about sustainable cities and a clear and confident communicator.<br />

A key element of this position is to advocate for The Green Network Plan to achieve sufficiently strong growth boundaries for Halifax to constitute a greenbelt. The position will also involve engagement with community groups, municipal officials, elected representatives, the public across Halifax, and perhaps provincial-level decision-makers. In addition, the Coordinator will monitor various city-building projects, including Phase 2 of Sawmill River Daylighting, and advocate for them when needed. Fundraising to secure continued support for the position is also an important part of the role.<br />
<br />
The position reports to the EACs staff directors, supports the Built Environment volunteer committee, and coordinates the Our HRM Alliance.<br />
<br />
Specific Responsibilities <br />
Support and advance the implementation of the recently approved Halifax Green Network Plan, including a clear urban growth boundary<br />
Analyze proposals and findings of the Halifax Green Network Plan<br />
Organize and implement a series of educational workshops to engage community in areas of the green network<br />
Work with partners, government staff, elected officials, the private sector and the public to identify and implement sustainable regional planning policy solutions<br />
Maintain and build relationships with diverse city leaders to strengthen our collective ability to create change<br />
Use media, social media, the website, and other campaign tools to galvanize public support for a sustainable city<br />
Coordinate the Our HRM Alliance, a coalition of over 60 member groups from around the HRM<br />
Maintain and strengthen the Alliance by hosting regular steering committee meetings (six per year) and full Alliance meetings (at least two per year)<br />
Support relationships with existing member groups and work to attract new groups<br />
Articulate and research preferred outcomes for Our HRM Alliance member groups, including actions necessary to achieve a greenbelt<br />
Work with other EAC team members to identify strategic opportunities for Regional Planning to forward environmental goals, with attention to social equity including access to affordable housing<br />
Support the implementation of Phase 2 of Daylighting of Sawmill River (Sullivans Pond Sewer Replacement Project)<br />
Secure ongoing funding for the position, manage project finances and complete reports to funders and other stakeholders<br />
Engage with volunteers and outside experts to amplify and support the above work<br />
Support the efforts of the Built Environment volunteer committee (BEC) by liaising with the volunteer chair, attending BEC meetings and supporting volunteer-led initiatives<br />
Participate in and support the overall work of the Ecology Action Centre<br />
Other tasks, as required<br />

QUALIFICATIONS<br />
<br />
Required Skills & Experience<br />
A passion for sustainable, equitable and vibrant cities and a determination to make change<br />
Proven skills as a relationship builder and change maker: able to provide facilitation and leadership on complex issues, build coalitions, and work effectively with diverse stakeholders, communities and community organizations<br />
Superb communication skills: working with the public, speaking, writing, and delivering presentations to various audiences<br />
Strong expertise, experience or research background in one or more of the following: land-use planning, urban planning, directed growth, transit planning, or placemaking<br />
Media savvy with excellent social media acumen<br />
Experience with fundraising, proposal writing, and project management<br />
Ability to work independently and effectively manage and prioritize multiple tasks<br />
Persistent, diplomatic, creative, optimistic, with a team-oriented approach<br />
Willing to work occasional evenings and weekends, and willing to travel within the Halifax region<br />
<br />
Desirable Skills & Experience<br />
Experience working with non-profit and community organizations<br />
Experience or expertise with respect to wilderness conservation, climate change mitigation, economic development, or water conservation<br />
Degree or equivalent experience in urban planning<br />
Familiarity with urban planning initiatives in the Halifax region<br />
Relationships with African-Nova Scotian and Mikmaq communities<br />
Staff and/or volunteer management experience<br />
Design experience (web design, InDesign)<br />
Experience with engagement organizing, storytelling and/or development evaluation<br />
Valid Drivers Licence (CarShare available with the position)<br />

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT<br />
35 hours per week at between $22.00-23.50/hour<br />
4 weeks of paid vacation; cost-shared benefits plan<br />
Position begins in May 2019.<br />
This is an on-site position at our Halifax office, which is located at 2705 Fern Lane in our renovated, energy-efficient green office building.<br />
The first floor of our building is designed to be universally accessible. We have a ramp at the front entrance with automatic door openers, a permanent ramp to the back door, a stair lift in the foyer between the split levels, and an accessible gender-neutral washroom. There is a good turning radius for wheelchairs on most of the first floor, including our primary meeting room and several work spaces.<br />
Our staff work in shared offices, with a moderate noise level, and good natural light.<br />
This job involves extended viewing of a computer monitor.<br />
