Job Purpose<br />
<br />
The Nature Trust of New Brunswick's Conservation Planning team is looking for an assistant! The Nature Trust is a charitable land conservation organization that is responsible for conserving over 7,000 acres (2,800 hectares) of land in more than 50 beautiful and diverse nature preserves throughout the province. Our mission is to conserve areas in New Brunswick that are ecologically significant, establishing nature preserves that remain protected forever, to steward the nature preserves through a network of volunteers and supporters, and to engage with the public on the importance of land conservation, New Brunswick’s natural heritage, biodiversity, and species at risk. <br />

The Conservation Planning Technician will work closely with the Conservation Planning Manager to contribute to Species at Risk and other conservation projects. They will be engaged in tasks related to fieldwork, report writing, research, and landowner outreach and engagement.<br />
<br />
Duties and Responsibilities<br />
<br />
Support the Conservation Planning Manager on Species at Risk and other conservation projects, including the following duties and responsibilities:<br />
• Participate in field surveys and site assessments of potential conservation lands and on private land;<br />
• Compile, prepare, and manage field survey data;<br />
• Prepare technical reports (e.g. site assessment, baseline, land acquisition etc.);<br />
• Develop and update management plans for Nature Preserves as required;<br />
• Conduct literature review / research as required;<br />
• Prepare site maps using GIS software as required;<br />
• Interact with the public, landowners, project partners, and stakeholders to advance land conservation initiatives;<br />
• Represent the Nature Trust of New Brunswick at formal and informal events;<br />
• Complete other associated tasks as assigned.<br />
<br />
Qualifications, Skills & Experience<br />
• Enrolled in or recent graduate of a post-secondary qualification program in Forestry, Natural Sciences, Environmental Science, Conservation or related work experience<br />
• Fieldwork experience, including bird and plant identification, botanical survey data collection and management, ecological land classification, baseline reporting etc.<br />
• Experience using GPS, ArcGIS, MS Word, MS Excel<br />
• Good working knowledge of New Brunswick’s natural environment, habitat and species<br />
• Excellent interpersonal skills (working within a team or with the public)<br />
• Hardworking, driven, well organized, adaptable<br />
• Ability and willingness to work long hours, in all weather conditions, including overnight travel and weekends when necessary<br />
• Knowledge of Species at Risk in New Brunswick<br />
• Experience in flora and fauna identification<br />
• Experience in a Non-Profit organization is an asset<br />
• Valid Driver’s license and insurance, valid First Aid<br />

Working conditions & Physical requirements<br />
<br />
Physical fitness is required at times during field days.<br />
<br />
Start and End Dates: mid-May to August 30th, with the potential to extend.<br />
