ORGANIZATION<br />

The Ecology Action Centre is an environmental charity based in Nova Scotia. We take leadership on critical environmental issues from biodiversity protection to climate change to environmental justice. We are grounded in community, and are a strong voice and watchdog for our environment. We work to catalyze change through policy advocacy, community development, and building awareness. We take a holistic approach to the environment and our economy to create a just and sustainable society.<br />

The Ecology Action Centres transportation team works to increase the use of transportation modes, like walking, cycling, and transit use, in Nova Scotia that reduce greenhouse gas emissions, promote healthy communities, and ensure equitable access for all.<br />
<br />
POSITION<br />
<br />
The Sustainable Transportation Summer Student will support the EACs community active transportation programs, which help participants develop active transportation (cycling and walking) skill competency, confidence and safety, encouraging them to choose active transportation as a means to travel within their communities. The Summer Student will split their time between the Making Tracks and Welcoming Wheels programs, and will also provide support to Bike Again!, our volunteer-run DIY bike repair space. The Summer Student works within the Sustainable Transportation Team and reports to the associated program coordinators for each program.<br />
Making Tracks (MT) helps people of all ages develop active transportation skill competency, confidence and safety, encouraging them to choose active transportation as a means to travel within their communities. Using an educational leader training model, Making Tracks enlists the help of adults and youth in teaching participants safety skills in skills in walking and cycling. Making Tracks uses skill-based, multiple session, experiential learning workshops so participants have hands on time to practice and learn, all while having fun!<br />
Welcoming Wheels is a program partnership that enables new Canadians to enjoy the many benefits of cycling. Through cycling, newcomers connect with their communities and gain access to services, people, places, jobs and more. Cycling promotes both personal and environmental health.<br />
<br />
Duties include:<br />
Work with EAC Making Tracks Coordinator and MT Leaders to run safe cycling courses<br />
Support Bike Again! with Wednesday evening Public Repair Night and Thursday evening Volunteer Repair Night<br />
Assist in facilitating Welcoming Wheels gifting sessions<br />
Assist in organizing Clayton Park-focused Making Tracks cycling courses and programs<br />
Maintain a safe, welcoming and comfortable work environment<br />
Assist in promoting and implementing EAC active transportation projects<br />
Other duties as required<br />

QUALIFICATIONS<br />
<br />
Required skills and experience:<br />
Knowledge of or experience with safe cycling/walking education such as Making Tracks (training will be provided on the specific MT curriculum)<br />
Competent and confident cycling safely in traffic<br />
Ability to work independently and manage time effectively<br />
Experience teaching or supervising children and youth<br />
Trustworthy and reliable<br />
Excellent interpersonal skills<br />
Strong written and oral communication skills<br />
Class 5 Drivers Licence (CarShare available with the position)<br />
Clear Vulnerable Sector Check and Child Abuse Registry Check<br />
Current post-secondary student returning to school in Fall 2019<br />
<br />
Desired skills and experience<br />
Certified Making Tracks Leader<br />
First Aid Certification CPR C +AED<br />

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT <br />
<br />
Start: mid-May for a 14 week term<br />
<br />
35 hours per week at $16/hr.<br />
<br />
Schedule will vary depending on program bookings. Regular schedule is Monday to Friday, with at least two evenings per week and some weekend work required.<br />
<br />
Location: This position will be based at our Halifax office at 2705 Fern Lane, with the option to work from another location in the province if desired.<br />
