Special requirements (based on funding): <br />

• Must have attended school in the spring and be returning to school in the fall of 2021<br />

• Must be based in and have lived in Nova Scotia for at least 6 months prior to start date<br />

The Maritimes-Guatemala Breaking the Silence Network (BTS) was established 30 years ago in response to the genocide and mass displacement of communities that occurred during the internal armed conflict in Guatemala. The network includes over 300 volunteer members throughout the Maritimes. BTS supports Guatemalan human rights and community development groups working for ongoing social, economic, environmental, and cultural justice. BTS centers the interconnectedness between the North and the South and the responsibility of Canadians to be engaged in solidarity, undertaking advocacy and education initiatives in Canada.<br />

Position Description <br />

<br />

The Communications Summer Lead will join Breaking the Silence (BTS) staff and local committees in supporting the work of Guatemalan-based partners. As part of the BTS Cooperant Program, the position will contribute to initiatives aimed at educating and engaging the Maritime community in solidarity actions by supporting the creation and dissemination of communications pieces related to our thematic areas of work. Under the supervision of BTS staff this position will take a lead on drafting written communications materials for publication through the BTS blog and newsletter based on ongoing research and analysis undertaken in collaboration with their colleagues.<br />

The ideal candidate for this position will have a strong interest and/or skills in conducting research and engaging in analysis related to social justice, writing short and concise communication pieces, and developing informational content. The ideal candidate will be interested in deepening their knowledge of solidarity work, human rights, anti-oppressive frameworks, and Central American history and politics.<br />

Key activities for this position include:<br />

• Monitoring, researching, documenting, and reporting on current events and the work of our partners in Guatemala and in the Maritimes.<br />

• Producing visual and written content for BTS’s social media, newsletter, and blog platforms.<br />

• Participating in regular planning and strategizing meetings; assisting with special projects as needed.<br />

• Conducting administrative tasks including note-taking, file organizing, progress tracking, etc.<br />

• Contributing to the delivery of information-sharing events such as online webinars and presentations.<br />

Qualifications of Ideal Candidate:<br />

• Experience with research and communications; writing, use of graphic design applications, web design<br />

• Enjoys working independently, collaboratively, and as part of a team<br />

• Interest in, and demonstrated commitment to, anti-oppression, community organizing and social justice solidarity<br />

• High cross-cultural awareness, understanding, and communication<br />

• Knowledge of Guatemala / Central American history and socio-political context and working knowledge of Spanish will be considered big assets<br />
