Position: OBC Training Academy Curriculum Manager<br />
Organization: Outward Bound Canada (OBC)<br />
Location: Remote, able to travel to regional bases in Atlantic Canada, Ontario, Alberta, and BC<br />

The Training Academy for Outdoor Professionals is an OBC initiative to address challenges for workers and employers in the outdoor industry related to high unemployment by providing training for aspiring outdoor instructors. Equally importantly, it will address barriers to access for marginalized populations to ensure Canada’s next generation of outdoor sector employees reflect Canada’s diversity.<br />

THE ROLE<br />
<br />
The Curriculum Manager will play an essential role in the development of the Training Academy. They will be responsible for the program design and development. While the Training Academy curriculum will be defined by OBC at program onset, the Curriculum Manager will perform ongoing evaluation of the effectiveness of program structure and content, modifying as the Training Academy program develops. This role works closely with the Principal, Curriculum & Education Manager of Outward Bound Canada and the Training Academy Instructor Trainers to ensure curriculum is consistent nationally, as well as specific to each region as needed. The Curriculum Manager will not only identify and communicate content to be covered in Academy programs, but create specific lesson plans for activity based learning for both classroom and wilderness environments. Salary: $60 000 - $70 000<br />

<br />
OPPORTUNITY FOR IMPACT<br />
• Identify needs in the outdoor industry regarding employee skills and training<br />
• Provide Instructor Trainers with resources to support aspiring instructors build the competencies needed to succeed in the outdoor industry<br />
• Connect with other outdoor programs and organizations to identify opportunities for capacity building within the work force and themes in staffing challenges<br />
• Liaise with post-secondary educational institutions to develop learning outcomes and assessment methods<br />
• Debrief Instructor Trainers after each program completion to gather information about successes and opportunities for further curriculum development<br />
• Create concrete tools for instructors to utilize in the field<br />
• Identify structural barriers to outdoor training programs that prevent interested candidates from participating and work to increase accessibility to the OBC Training Academy by eliminating such barriers<br />
• Recognize systems that impede the success and career development of instructors from marginalized communities and create innovative solutions for a more inclusive work environment<br />
• Work with partners in Indigenous communities to incorporate Indigenous worldviews into classroom and land-based programming<br />
• Seek out and apply for grants<br />
• Collaborate with the Training Academy Marketing Coordinator and Recruitment Manager to develop messaging that accurately represents the program<br />
• Develop certification programs to increase relevance and value of the Training Academy industry-wide<br />

REQUIREMENTS<br />
• Knowledge of experiential education processes and models<br />
• Experience working as an educator or facilitator for youth and adults from diverse backgrounds<br />
• Excellent verbal and written communication<br />
• Understands the systems and impacts of widespread and ongoing systemic racism and discrimination which prevents the outdoor industry from being a safe space for many and actively works to correct this<br />
• Strong understanding of considerations for creating inclusive spaces for people from a variety of backgrounds<br />
• Proficient at giving and receiving feedback<br />
• Interpersonal skills, a “people-at-the center” mindset with a solid ability to build trusting relationships<br />
• Personal commitment to diversity with a vision for a student group in the Training Academy that reflects the Canadian population<br />
• Comfortable in a backcountry wilderness environment<br />
• Familiarity with key OBC and Training Academy curricula:<br />
• Technical Expertise: Wilderness navigation; Weather forecast interpretation; Wilderness risk management; rescue skills; managing and empowering beginners in technical terrain; outdoor adventure for differently-abled people.<br />
• Environmental Leadership: “Leave No Trace”; Indigenous land perspectives; managing Canada's land and waters for future generations.<br />
• Resilience: Fostering and Increasing personal resilience through expeditions;<br />
• Social and Emotional Intelligence: Mental health First Aid; Justice, Equity, Diversity and Inclusion training; cross-cultural competence.<br />
