Grotowski Technique with Jennifer Tarver

The work of Polish theatre director, teacher and drama theorist, Jerzy
Grotowski, has had a major
impact on the landscape of experimental theatre and actor training in the
West since the 1960's.
This week-long intensive will present concepts based on Grotowski's methods
geared to wake up
an actor's sharpest source of intelligence; the body. Through physical
action the actor re-
discovers the basic elements of theatrical form, providing the essential
groundwork for approach
to text, character and improvisation. Based on the premise that the voice
is an extension of the body and emanates from precise physical action, the
work addresses disciplined techniques for vocal and body conditioning.

Exercises focus on:
· Perception in movement · Connection of gesture to sound
· Total body engagement in the flow of energy/action
· Using organic impulses to create precise and spontaneous actions
 · The incorporation and interplay of text and action
· Developing knowledge of compositional techniques in creating performance
(dynamics, rhythm, accent and pause)
· Concentration and focus
· Creative passivity and the art of listening
Each participant will be required to have a theatrical or literary passage
committed to memory for use during the week (ready for the first session).

Advanced Scene Study with Rosemary Dunsmore

The power of a great performance lies in the actor's ability to reveal,
under pressure, the
intricacies of the human heart. A solid understanding of the craft of
acting is the actor's most
reliable tool in theatre, film and television.

Confidence in the craft gives you creative control.
Scenes should not be about hitting marks, finding your light, etc. The real
mystery (and fun) is
the acting work. In this scene study class we will focus on an effective
actor exploration of the material - uncovering the human event - choice of
actions, objectives and obstacles. We will also befriend the camera's
particular demands, and learn what questions to ask on set in order to
ensure your best work is filmed.
Scene partners will be assigned and participants will prepare work for the
first day of
class. Participants will be expected to do work outside of class hours.
Attendance in
class and participation in work outside of class is vital not only for you
but for your scene
partner(s).
