Equity Coordinator
(1 year term)
The Canada Council for the Arts is an independent national agency which
provides grants and services to professional Canadian artists and arts
organizations. It is funded by and reports to Parliament through the
Minister of Canadian Heritage.
Under the stewardship of the Director and the direction of the Director Arts
Division, the incumbent is responsible for making recommendations on policy,
budgets, grant programs and program infrastructure affecting artists and
arts organisations of cultural diversity in Canada; taking these to the
Council's Board, if necessary; providing support and recommendations to
facilitate the effectiveness of the Advisory Committee of the Equity Office;
developing and implementing policies and initiatives to assist and promote
culturally/racially diverse artistic communities, in consultation with
Section Heads , the Inter-Arts and Aboriginal Coordinators; addressing
issues of common concern with the latter; nurturing and maintaining a strong
network with culturally/racially diverse communities, artists and
associations; understanding priorities, difficulties and issues related to
the culturally/racially diverse artistic community; developing relevant
communications, recruitment and outreach strategies and initiatives.
The ideal candidate will have:
extensive knowledge of the diverse cultural/racial communities across
Canada; including their needs and interests, as well as familiarity with the
general artistic milieu;
well-developed interpersonal, presentation, planning, marketing, public
relations and administrative skills;
a clear understanding of the Council's mandate, policies and programs;
proven ability to organize, deliver and evaluate professional development
workshops;
experience in developing and evaluating policies;
a minimum of seven years' experience with progressively responsible
positions in diverse cultural communities or organizations;
a University degree and/or combination of education and experience in one of
the arts disciplines;
an ability to work with groups in a facilitative capacity.
The ideal candidate will have a working knowledge of English and French.
Good desktop computer skills are essential. The position requires up to 45
days of travel per year. Please note that this position is located in
Ottawa.
