The Play will be produced by Nightwood Theatre at the Tarragon Theatre
Extra Space.  Rehearsals begin January 19, 2004 and the show runs
February 19- March 14, 2004

Character Breakdown:
Setting: 1905-1919 Shanghai, China

Characters:
POA-POA: The maternal Grandmother of the lead character Siu-Ling.  She
has had a bitter life, growing up as a concubine\'s daughter in a
wealthy household, and eventually ending up as a seamstress.  She is
driven by her need to reclaim her former life and social status.  She is
traditional but with a fiery temper.  character age: 50-60

MERCHANT LI: A lonely fabric merchant of Shanghai, who has a fetish for
lotus shoes and bound feet.  He runs a fabric shop visited by Siu-Ling
and Poa-Poa.  He has ties to Western Cultures and the black market of
Shanghai.  He teaches Siu-Ling to read and provides her with the Chinese
translation of \"A Doll\'s House.\"  In his loneliness, he resorts to
prostitutes and opium dens.  He is a complicated loner who ultimately
loses his battle with his obsessions.  Character age: 35-50

MING: Siu-Ling\'s maidservant.  She has worked her entire life as a
servant in the Chen household.  She has an acute understanding of class
and how best to use it to her own advantage.  She is rebellious,
mischievous and rough around the edges.  There is always a sense of
danger around her.  Character Age: Teenager (can be played by actor
20-30)
