Stage Managing The Arts (S.M.Arts)
May 9-11, 2003

Stage Managing the Arts is a one of a kind conference for both
experienced and new stage managers. For the first time ever in Montreal,
local stage managers will have the opportunity to participate in this
three day event which will bring together some of the finest Stage
Managers in Quebec and beyond. The Conference will explore some aspects
of stage management and offer the opportunity to share experiences and
knowledge whether during a class or in the midst of a chat. S.M.Arts
aims to present the varied elements of the stage and the qualities of a
manager to the participants.
Courses:
100 Role of Stage Management: A basic introduction for new stage
managers into the art of stage management.
101 Calling Cues: An introduction to the various approaches to calling
cues for a production.
102 Scheduling and Planning: A discussion and practical application of
how production elements affect day-to day and week-to-week scheduling
and planning from Prep Week through Opening.
103 Safety: A study of the role of the stage manager in identifying
safety concerns during rehearsal and the run of a production.
104 Canadian Theatre Agreement: Study of the clauses in the C. T. A.
using general concepts and specific examples.
105 Reading Music: A basic introduction to reading music, and
incorporating such knowledge into calling a musical.
106 Equity and the UdA: A study of the stage managers role in the UdA
and how it differs from Equity stage management.
107 Stage Combat: A brief journey into the various forms of stage
fighting and safety concerns.
108 Giving Notes: An introduction to the art of giving notes to cast,
crew and production staff.
Winston Morgan has been stage managing in Canada for twenty-four years
and has had the opportunity to work in a variety of situations including
small, medium and large theatres across Canada, as well as festival and
commercial productions. Most recently Winston has worked at the Toronto
Film Festival, the Rendez-vous with Madness Film Festival, Tarragon
Theatre, the Elgin Winter Garden for the Mirvishes. He has also taught
stage management sessions at Ryerson Polytechnic University, Humber
College, York University and George Brown College.
