THE FALLEN GYPSY
Based on the life story of Rom songwriter, poet and performer Bronislawa
Wajs (better known as Papusza), The Fallen Gypsy is a beautiful and
haunting theatrical experience about a talented woman caught between two
cultures - and forced to choose between her art and her people.
In a psychiatric hospital in Silesia, Papusza re-lives her struggle to
communicate her people\'s often-secretive culture and bittersweet legacy
to both Rom and Polish peoples. The first literate female Rom poet,
Papusza had illicitly learned the very non-Gypsy skill of reading and
writing, earning both the disapproval of her mother as well as the
suspicion of her
community. When a number of her poems are published by the dissident
poet Ficowski, Papusza has to defend herself before a Gypsy court on
charges of betrayal.
Poetry, music, movement, song and flamenco interweave as Papusza
navigates the crevices between colliding worlds, daring all that is
forbidden to her as a Rom, a woman, an artist and a visionary.
