CALL FOR APPLICATIONS
Equity Showcase Theatre & Tapestry New Opera Works' 2003 Music
Directors'/Stage Directors' Laboratory
General Statement
In response to growing interest in the field of music theatre and opera,
and in anticipation of an increase of new works entering the repertoire,
Tapestry and Equity Showcase have initiated a groundbreaking
collaboration for stage and music directors.
The Need
Currently, opportunities for directors and music directors to explore
the full potential of music in live performance are limited. There are
few opportunities for Canadian stage directors to work in the field of
opera and opportunities in the field of new opera/music theatre are even
rarer.
The Program
Initiated in 2001, the Directors' Lab is a one-week intensive workshop
for stage directors and music directors to explore the full potential of
music in live performance and to take full advantage of a shared
artistic vision.
Six residencies will be offered - three to music directors and three to
stage directors
Lab leaders are Wayne Strongman, artistic director of Tapestry and Keith
Turnbull, noted teacher, director and dramaturg.
Participants will have access to singers, repetiteurs and dramaturgical
staff while collaborating on selected works in development.
Eligibility
Professional stage directors, conductors and music directors must be
collaboration-minded, willing to explore the issues involved in tackling
new works of opera/music theatre, share their viewpoints, learn best
practises and explore the dynamics between music director and director.
Stage directors, music directors and conductors who do not yet have a
known body of work, must provide a letter of reference from a
professional in the field to be eligible for the residency program.
All participants accepted will receive a residency bursary offered by
Equity Showcase and Tapestry, that covers program fees of $2,000 and
will each receive a $200 honourarium for the period. Participants
selected will be responsible for their own travel and accommodation.
Participants must be available from August 20th to 27th (inclusive) on
a full-time basis.
