1. MICHAEL CHEKOV ACTING TECHNIQUE - TORONTO
--------------------------------------------------------------------
One Day Intensive Introduction to The Michael Chekhov Acting Technique
with Ragnar Freidank and Julie LeGal

Michael Chekhov, nephew of the Russian playwright Anton Chekhov, was
known as one of Russia's greatest actors. Stanislavski is reported to
have said: If you want to understand my work look at Michael Chekhov.
Subsequently, Chekhov developed his own acting method and taught a
number of actors such as Gregory Peck, Yul Brynner, Clint Eastwood,
Marilyn Monroe, Marlon Brando, and many others.

THE WORKSHOP

We will work with several principles that can be found in his book To
The Actor:

 qualities of movement

the actor's imagination

psychological gesture

A main principle of Chekhov's work is the relationship between outer
physical movement and inner sensation. Or as Chekhov puts it: There are
no purely physical exercises. All exercises are psycho-physical.
Following this principle we will explore a fresh way to work with the
actor's feeling life. We will introduce different techniques to work
with imagination and investigate the realm of the in-between, the realm
of what happens between two actors. This will finally lead us to what
Chekhov calls the psychological gesture.

The aim of the workshop is to introduce tools that can help the actor's
own creative individuality find its unique expression.

The Workshop will be held Saturday, May 8th, 10:00 am to 6:00pm at
Equity Showcase Theatre

2. SCENE STUDY IN CONTEMPORARY THEATRE WITH KURT REIS - TORONTO
------------------------------------------------------------------------
------------------------

The Actors Workshop is pleased to announce a special new series of
intensive scene study classes led by the renowned Canadian/American
director-teacher Kurt Reis. This is not a class for beginners. Although
professional union membership is not a prerequisite, experience and
commitment are essential. Advance preparation and in-class work are the
key to getting as much as possible out of these classes. This series of
8 classes is designed to deal with the practical process of analysis and
execution of scenes from contemporary American plays. Partners will be
assigned to work on short segments of scenes for presentation (each
scene to be presented several times over the course of the series) with
the emphasis on process rather than result. In short, these classes will
concentrate on the craft of acting, helping you to develop a way of
working that is right for you to solve both scenic and acting problems.
We stress that this is not a class about theory. It is a class about
doing. Mr. Reis is less interested in performance than he is in your
working technique. (Limited to 12 actors)

4 weeks, 8 sessions $300. (3 hour classes) May 3, 7, 11, 14, 18, 21, 25,
28. (10:30 AM - 2:30 PM)

Equity Members - $240.

Kurt Reis is a pioneer in the development of professional actor training
in Canada. He was the founder and Artistic Director of THE CENTRE FOR
ACTORS STUDY IN TORONTO (CAST) for 20 years. He has taught acting on all
