2004 TORONTO FRINGE AUDITION NOTICE

SLEEPLESS: A NEW MUSICAL

>From the creators of Top Gun! The Musical comes Sleepless: A New Musical.

What happens to your dreams when you can't sleep?  For some people, the Hasta La Siesta Sleep Disorder Clinic is the last hope for a peaceful night's rest.  But this group of insomniacs, sleepwalkers and narcoleptics are about to welcome a new arrival whose problem makes theirs pale: a man who hasn't slept in 20 years.

Sleepless is written by Denis McGrath with music and musical direction by Scott White, will be directed by Shari Hollett and produced by Derrick Chua.  The Toronto Fringe Festival runs from June 30 to July 11, 2004.

We are looking for musical theatre performers who have good comedic skills.  

Character Descriptions:

1) Nurse - Female, 30's: world weary, working class, harried, runs the clinic.

2) Male, late 40's - early 50's. Bit of a mystery man, shows up at the clinic with a dark secret.

3) Male, 40's and older. Narcoleptic.  Zero Mostel-like character.  Broad, big, prone to falling asleep at inopportune moments.  Physical comedy background a plus.

4) Young Female, Mid 20's to Mid 30's. Insomniac. Tragic & Romantic. Ingénue type.

5) Young Male, Mid 20's to Mid 30's. Sleepwalker. Love interest for the Ingénue. Straight arrow type.

6) Older Female, 40's and older. Has chronic fatigue syndrome.  Loud, gypsy type.  Married to the Narcoleptic.  Has kind of a bickering relationship with him.

Requirements:  Performers are asked to prepare a short comedic monologue (max. 2 minutes) and a musical number, either up-tempo pop or contemporary musical theatre (2 minutes), to be sung a capella, or you may provide your own accompaniment on tape or cd or bring an instrument.  There is a piano at the audition room which you may use.  Sides may also be provided for a cold read.

Equity / non-Equity welcome.  Equity performers will be engaged under an Equity Fringe Agreement with all net revenues from the production divided equally among all participants.  Please send photo and resume by Thursday, April 1 at 5 pm to:

Auditions will be held on Monday, April 5 at Equity Showcase Theatre, 651 Dufferin Street, north-east corner of Dufferin & Dundas, in St. Anne's Parish Hall.
