September 15-19. Directed by Sid Zanforlin.
At Centaur Theatre, 453 St. François-Xavier, box office: 288-3161
Tsultrum8 Theatre Company is thrilled to remount this successful production first presented at the Monument National this past spring. Don't miss this powerful play at the Centaur Theatre, now given a performance enhancing injection for a larger stage.
Jesus Hopped the A Train deals with two inmates in "protective custody" at Riker's Island penitentiary in New York. Both men, Angel Cruz and Lucius Jenkins, are accused of murder, but the similarities end there. Lucius has raped and murdered at least eight victims and has "found God" in his captivity. He faces extradition to Florida where he will be sentenced to death. Angel, on the other hand, has shot an evangelical reverend in the rear end, believing the reverend has brainwashed his best friend. The reverend suffers a heart attack while in the hospital to treat his wounded buttock and dies. The District Attorney ups the charge to murder 1.
The play questions the validity of self-induced salvation. It also examines the difference between true faith and selfish uses of religion. Most importantly, it asks why God plays such an important role in a system that professes to have a separation between church and state... and where does truth and justice actually fit into this scheme?
Cast: Jay Cutler, Kwasi Songui, Holly O'Brien, Eric Davis and Eric Digras. Designer: Rob Denton
About the company: The Tsultrum8 Theater Company was formed by Jay Cutler in 2002 to promote Canadian theatre in New York City. The success of Little Blood Brother by Montreal playwright Vittorio Rossi performed in New York is reciprocated here with Jesus Hopped the A Train. This exchange of talent is in keeping with the passionate spirit that has made these two cities artistic pioneers over the last century. Just like our lives, theatre should be daring, lovely, grotesque, angry and hilarious. Jay Cutler comes from a well-known theater family in Montreal of which Maurice Podbrey (former artistic director of Centaur Theatre), Allison Darcy (Girls, Girls, Girls, and Small Returns) and Keir Cutler (Teaching Shakespeare, Teaching Detroit, Is Shakespeare Dead?) are members.
