WORKSHOP DIGEST FOR THE WEEK OF MARCH 18
--------------------------------------------------------------
1. MEISNER ACTING TECHNIQUE WORKSHOP WITH JOHN RIVEN
------------------------------------------------------------------------
------------
Sanford Meisner was co-founder of the Group Theatre who took
Stanislavsky's original theories and principles and introduced "Method"
acting to America. Meisner's own philosophy is based on the creation of
real and truthful behaviour under imaginary circumstances. An audience
will always choose to watch a 2 year old over most actors because of one
thing. Whatever the 2 year old is doing, they are really doing it and
really living in the moment. The work focuses on helping students get
out of their heads and back into trusting their gut instincts.
John Riven has been teaching ongoing classes in the Meisner acting
technique in Toronto for over three years. He is a graduate of the
Neighbourhood Playhouse where he studied under Sanford Meisner and
Richard Pinter. He was a founding member of the Shadowfax Theatre
Company in NYC. The company included many Neighbourhood Playhouse
graduates and produced original plays in NYC during the 80's. Other
founding members include 4 time Emmy winner Allison Janney : American
Beauty, The West Wing, Steve Rogers, screenwriter: Hope Floats, Step
mom, and Lisa Marie Radano , playwright and screenwriter: Mrs.
Winterbourne. While directing and acting with Shadowfax, John began
teaching acting and eventually opened his own studio in Manhattan. One
of his more prominent students, Doug Hutchison, went on to starring
roles in the films, The Green Mile, The Salton Sea and Sam and Me.
Many respected artists have studied and practised Meisner such as James
Gandolfini, Jack Nicholson, Anthony Hopkins, Kim Basinger, Jeff Bridges,
Jeff Goldblum, David Mamet, Steve McQueen, Robert Duval, Allison Janney,
Diane Keaton, Gregory Peck, and Joanne Woodward to name a few.
Classes are ongoing and held at Central Studios, 680 Yonge St. Please
call Cherilee at 416-466-1884 for more information about session times
and to reserve a spot. Equity or Actra members pay $175 and non-union
$225. Please note that a $50 deposit will be required.e is the
foundation of the technique,
