WORKSHOP DESCRIPTION
Anyone can write bad sketch comedy, but good writing requires hard work,
craftsmanship and a ruthless ability to revise and polish, often while
working to insane deadlines. In this hands-on workshop you will write a
lot - both in-class and homework. In addition to your own sketch ideas,
we'll explore a range of forms, including blackouts, character pieces,
commercial spoofs and genre parodies. You'll learn about story-arc,
dramatic tension, character types, finding the beats and rhythm, and
dialogue versus physical comedy.
We'll read and present work in class to see what works, what doesn't and
how to fix it. We'll try to build on your strengths, identify weaknesses
and push your writing in some new directions.
