REFERENDUM RESULTS ANNOUNCED

 

Constitutional referendum ballots have now been tabulated. The proposed
change in Equity's Constitution to reduce the size of Council from its
current minimum of 34 to 20 has passed.

 

A total of 5372 ballots were mailed out and distributed to eligible
Equity members in good standing. A total of 1812 ballots were received,
representing a return rate of 33.7%. There were 39 spoiled ballots,
leaving a total of 1773 valid votes.

 

Of the total valid ballots received 1591 agreed with the proposed change
(89.73%) and 182 ballots did not agree with the proposed change
(10.27%). 

 

Article 7 of Equity's Constitution states "Where the Council has
considered and approved an amendment to the Constitution, such amendment
shall be made after an affirmative vote of not less than seventy-five
percent (75%) of the membership voting in a referendum sent to all
members." As the total number of ballots supporting the change exceeded
75% of the membership voting, Article 4 of Equity's Constitution will
now read:

The affairs of the Association shall be managed by a Council comprised
of at least twenty (20) members with one member from each Region and
additional members from a Region based on the number of members in the
Region proportionate to the total membership.

 

In accordance with the amended Constitution, Council size for the
2006-2009  term will be twenty-two (22). Councillor representation in
each Region will be as follows:

British Columbia and the Yukon - 3

Alberta North and the Northwest Territories - 1

Alberta South - 1

Saskatchewan - 1

Manitoba and Nunavut - 1

Ontario - 7

Eastern Ontario/Outaouais - 1

Quebec - 1

Atlantic Region - 1

Dance Region - 1 

Western Opera - 1

Eastern Opera - 2

Stage Management - 1
