Call for Submissions - Ten Green Bottles 

Te-Amim Music Theatre is seeking actors to participate in a
script-development workshop for the upcoming drama, Ten Green Bottles, a
theatrical adaptation of the award-winning book by Toronto based author,
Vivian Kaplan. The workshop will take place July 7-13, 2008 and will be
led by director Mark Cassidy in collaboration with designer Jung-Hye
Kim.

Actors should be comfortable with improvisation, collaboration and
creating new work. The play will blend movement sequences with more
naturalistic scenes and monologues. We are looking for five actors to
take part in this development workshop focusing mainly on depicting the
following characters;

Nini, early twenties: Feisty, stubborn, strong-willed and brave.
Motivated by idealism as it relates to human equality, the existence of
the Jewish people, with a Socialistic bent. Togetherness of the family
unit paramount in importance. Generous and charitable. Although she is
the youngest of the sisters, she ends up in a matriarchal role, taking
the lead in many circumstances.

Stella, mid twenties: Likes things in their place, coffee at 4 each day,
a sense of propriety and order. Married to a much older man, yearning
for someone to care for her in a fatherly protective way. Also concerned
about family. Thrifty. Often in a hurry.

Erna, late twenties: Most quiet of the group. Has benefited most from
position of first child as she grew up in a more stable and financially
more secure environment. Learned to speak French and do needlepoint;
things that she uses in later life for survival.

Willi, teenager: Having lost his father as an infant, and suffered the
ordeals of the Nazi occupation at a young age, he is most affected. He
is still a teenager when they are forced to go to Shanghai and is young
when his mother dies there. His sisters all take on the role of mother
towards him. Learns survival skills, perseverance and endurance to
overcome obstacles.

Poldi, mid twenties: Kind, good-natured with a charismatic personality.
Great story-teller. Intelligent, studious, speaks 8 languages.
Idealistic. Courageous against his enemies. In his determination to
outwit the Italian Fascists by forging passports to get Jewish refugees
out of Italy and by joining the party in the guise of an Italian
national. Stands up to Japanese soldiers. Fiercely loyal and generous to
friends and family.

Synopsis: 

Ten Green Bottles is a true story that depicts the fierce perseverance
of one family who endured and overcame sufferings of biblical
proportions in order to survive.
It was a time when ordinary people became heroes.
