EQUITY CALLS FOR ARTS AND CULTURE FUNDING TO BE RESTORED IN B.C.

The arts and culture sector in B.C. is facing a funding crisis created
by drastic cuts to B.C. Arts Council and Gaming Commission grants.

The September 2009 B.C. Gaming Commission arts and culture funding cuts
were estimated to be between 11% and 26%. Projections are for an
additional 85% cut to arts funding in next year's provincial budget and
a 92% cumulative total cut by 2012. 

In response to these devastating cuts Equity has launched an outreach
campaign for its B.C. membership, calling on the provincial government
to restore arts and culture funding to 2008/2009 levels in its next
budget.

Equity members in B.C. are urged to speak out about this issue crucial
to the arts and culture community. Members residing in B.C. will receive
a set of five postcards along with their Winter 2010 issue of EQ -
Equity Quarterly. Members are urged to mail the enclosed cards to:
* Gordon Campbell, Premier of British Columbia
* Kevin Krueger, Minister of Tourism, Culture and the Arts
* Colin Hansen, Minister of Finance
* Rich Coleman, Minister of Housing and Social Development.
* An additional postcard is designated for a local Member of the
Legislative Assembly (MLA). Equity members can search for their MLA at
https://www.leg.bc.ca/mla/3-1-1.htm/
