"In 2012, as in the three previous years of this term, Equity's Council again faced the daunting task of selecting award recipients from many deserving candidates." reports Allan Teichman, Equity President.
Evelyne Anderson (Winnipeg, MB) and Marti Maraden (Stratford, ON) will both receive Life Membership in Equity in recognition of their extraordinary careers in the performing arts.
"Evie" Anderson has been an active member of Winnipeg's theatre community for over 50 years and she is truly "the first lady of Manitoba Theatre." Her legacy as a singer and performer is renowned and her charismatic performances have been an inspiration to an endless list of Canadian performers.
As an actor, director and artistic director, Marti Maraden is an immensely valuable part of the national landscape, and has devoted her life (past, present and future) to Canadian theatre. Her work at a myriad of theatres across Canada continues to impress and inspire.
"It is, in fact, Equity's honour to recognize and celebrate these special individuals who have given so selflessly of their skill and enthusiasm." stated President Teichman. "Evie's work has provided inspiration to almost every actor in Manitoba for generations. Marti's generosity of spirit is legendary and she has auditioned literally hundreds of performers from coast-to-coast." stated Teichman.
The 2012 recipient of the Larry McCance Award is former Equity Councillor Dawn Obokata (Toronto, ON) in recognition of her distinguished service to the Association and its members. Dawn has been a tireless advocate of the Association, serving as both Vice President External and Second Vice-President. She participated on numerous negotiating teams, and she was an ideal Equity representative at FIA (International Federation of Actors) events world-wide promoting inter-cultural understanding.
Dedicated arts supporter Martha Lou Henley (Vancouver, BC) is this year's recipient of Honorary Membership in Equity. A beloved patron of the art and culture in her home town, Martha Lou's generous philanthropy has been most keenly felt in the opera arena. Most of Vancouver's classical, choral and operatic performance organizations have been beneficiaries of Martha Lou's financial support for over 40 years.
The 2012 Stage West - Equity Emerging Theatre Artist Award winner is Mayahuel Tecozautla (Toronto, ON). This Award and its $2,000 cash prize was initiated in celebration of Equity's silver anniversary in 2001, and recognizes an Equity member of three years or less who has already made a significant contribution and impression as an artist. Mayahuel is a multitalented performer, dancer and choreographer with a strong artistic vision. She has already distinguished herself as a courageous and dedicated creator using the arts to engage diverse communities.
