Looking for very experienced theatre actors, out of school, skilled with poetic, challenging text. Directed by Jennifer H. Capraru.
1. OSIP MANDELSHTAM Male 32 - 45. Courageous and defiant poet who must now face the consequences of writing a poem attacking Stalin.
2. NADIA MANDELSHTAM Female 30-40. Osip's wife, resolute and stoic in the face of danger, and stands by her husband. She is determined to see that his poetry survives.
3. ANNA AKHMATOVA - 30 - 45 Famous Russian poet and Osip's close friend. Anna is brave and takes great risks for the Mandelshtams.
4. ALEKSANDR - Male 35-45 A satirist and friend of Mandelshtam's. It is uncertain where his loyalties lie- is he truly a friend or an informer working for the authorities?
The play relates the story of Stalin's persecution of Osip Mandelsthtam, one of the foremost Russian poets of the twentieth century. Copies available at the Metro Toronto Library Arts Desk.
