Ethno-cultural mandate or ethno-cultural casting statement:
Driftwood Theatre is dedicated to reflecting Canada’s rich diversity on and
off stage in all of its work. Diverse artists of all backgrounds regardless
of age, disability, ethno-cultural identity or gender are encouraged to
apply.
Additional information:
Are you up for the challenge of designing a production which fluidly
incorporates the unique quality of over 20 Ontario communities? Imagine
epic, site-specific theatre with Ontario’s greatest outdoor spaces as
powerful backdrops, where every performance is unique to each particular
community.
The Bard’s Bus Tour is an annual summer Ontario tradition, touring to
outdoor venues in over 25 communities for 22 years.
In 2017, Driftwood Theatre will unpack Shakespeare’s great tragedy Othello,
exploring cultural tokenism and stereotypes, and the experience of people of
colour through the lens of one of Canada’s most important historical
peacekeeping events - the 1974 Turkish invasion of Cyprus in which Canadian
peacekeepers took part.
Rehearsals for Othello will begin in June 2017 in Toronto, with public
performances between July 15 – August 6, 2017.
Scenic, Costume, Lighting and Sound Designers are invited to make
application by sending a brief cover letter and resume (as one pdf file) by
email to Artistic Director, Jeremy Smith (jsmith at driftwoodtheatre.com).
Other Considerations
- limited power supply
- weather permitting, all performances happen outdoors
- production elements will be installed at each venue the morning of
each performance, and struck post-performance
