DANCE EQUITY TO LAUNCH SUMMER 2017

Over the past year, Equity conducted in-depth outreach to artists in the
independent dance community. We talked to some of Canada’s top independent
artists examining their unique struggles as professional dancers and
exploring how membership in Equity could support real change.

A rights awareness campaign, focused on empowering professional dance
artists seeking respectful working conditions, is the result of this work.
This summer, Equity will launch the Dance Equity campaign, including
continued outreach and engagement with this community, a website dedicated
to connecting with independent dancers, a new policy broadening engagement
options for a wide variety of styles and forms, and revised membership
requirements for professional dance artists.

As part of the campaign, Equity will introduce the OPEN Policy (coming
soon) for short duration and multi-engagement contracts. In recognition of
the needs of this unique artist group, Equity’s Council has generously
reduced Equity’s regular $1,000 initiation fee to $10 for a 12-month
outreach period. This will afford independent dancers an opportunity to
access to Equity membership for the first time.
