[CANUFNET] Frazinus ssp. -do their roots plug drainage systems

I would recommend that you run a Tree Root Barrier along the length of the house that is exposed to the Ash.

Excavate a 2-3" trench on the tree side of the drainage tile along the perimeter of the foundation and curve both ends of the trench back toward the tree slightly. Trench down at least 4 ft.
Then install a 4' root barrier in the trench, with the ribbed side of the barrier facing the tree. The head of the barrier should be 1/4" above the soil grade so that the roots do not grow over it.
Back fill and compact the trench with the same material that you just excavated.

You can lay sod over top of the trench and the head of the root barrier, or install mulch, aggregate, what ever is aesthetically pleasing.

A proper Tree Root Barrier will prevent the roots from reaching the foundation.
Once they get down 4' the lack of water and air will re-direct the roots back toward the tree or they will run along the root barrier in search of a more hospitable environment.

Does anyone have experience with Fraxinus ever having entered and
plugged perforated drainage pipe? I assume the deeper the pipe the less
chance of it happening. I am only familiar with Salix, and sometimes
Thuja plicata, doing this. My feeling is that a tree's roots would not
search out drain tiles unless it was suffering drought conditions. The
water held in the soil is a much more constant supply with adequate
rain.
My client has a neighbour whose house foundations are 15 feet from the
base of a 35 foot high Fraxinus. The foundations are 3 feet below
finshed grade. The neighbour worries the trees roots will grow into her
perimeter drain pipes. Any comments?
