Tree Canada announces Green Streets Canada 2008/09 Winners

(Ottawa, ON – May 29, 2008) —Tree Canada is pleased to announce the list of
the winning Green <http://www.treecanada.ca/programs/greenstreets/index.htm>
Streets Canada 2008/09 municipalities who have successfully demonstrated
their innovation and creative approaches in helping green Canada through
their urban forest programs.

Canada is the flagship program of Tree Canada and is the country’s only
national urban forest innovation initiative. It rewards municipalities that
have gone beyond the call of duty and have recognized the importance of
ensuring the survival of trees in their urban communities. More than 370
municipalities have participated in the Green Streets program since its
inception. The funds are used for projects that develop tools and practices
that sustain and promote the health of urban forests, including
state-of-the-art municipal planning guidelines, community tree stewardship,
outreach and awareness, planting and maintenance programs.

Canada allows municipalities large and small, to take advantage of the
benefits trees provide. Every time a new tree is put into the ground, it
immediately begins to absorb carbon and produce oxygen while purifying the
air we breathe. Green Streets winners understand how trees beautify the
area, create natural wind and noise screens and reduce the need to heat and
air-condition homes and places of work. They also provide homes for small
animals and birds reduce soil runoff from erosion and allow all residents to
relax and enjoy the outdoors.

des municipalités gagnantes du programme Ma rue, mes

2008-2009. Ces municipalités ont bien démontré leurs démarches innovatrices
et créatives pour reverdir le Canada à l’aide d’un programme de foresterie
urbaine.

Ma rue, mes <http://www.treecanada.ca/programs/greenstreets/index_f.htm>
arbres constitue le programme vedette d’Arbres Canada ainsi que la seule
initiative canadienne du genre en foresterie urbaine. Le programme
récompense les municipalités qui ont surpassé leurs obligations et ont
reconnu l’importance d’assurer la survie des arbres dans leurs collectivités
urbaines. Plus de 370 municipalités ont participé au programme Ma rue, mes
arbres depuis sa création. Les fonds sont affectés à des projets visant la
mise au point d’outils et de pratiques d’avant-garde soutenant et stimulant
la santé des forêts urbaines, y compris des lignes directrices de
planification municipale, la gérance communautaire des arbres, des
programmes de diffusion et de sensibilisation ainsi que des programmes de
plantation et d’entretien.

Le programme Ma rue, mes arbres permet aux municipalités, grandes ou
petites, de tirer parti des avantages que procurent les arbres. Dès qu’un
arbre est planté, il commence à absorber du carbone et à produire de
l’oxygène, ce qui purifie l’air. Les gagnants du programme comprennent à
quel point les arbres embellissent leur secteur, créent des brise-vent et
des écrans anti-bruit naturels, et réduisent le besoin de chauffer et de
rafraîchir les domiciles et les lieux de travail. De plus, ils abritent les
oiseaux et les petits animaux, réduisent l’écoulement de surface, protégeant
ainsi le sol de l’érosion, et fournissent des lieux de détente et de plaisir
accessibles à tous.
