Thank you everyone who worked so hard to get the message about the importance of urban forestry heard by government. I am glad to see that the CCFM has mentioned urban forestry in their vision. I understand that this is a big first step.

I agree that the other issues identified are important and need to be addressed. But, in my opinion, they mentioned urban forestry but otherwise completely ignored it in their vision. The CCFM does not recognize urban forestry as being important probably because of the makeup of the organization which has no municipal representation. It gets one paragraph buried on page 7 of the report!!!!!!!!! Urban Forestry shares a small line with a lot of other groups on page 5 and 11. There is no mention of partnerships with or roles and responsibilities of municipal governments. The municipal governments need to be involved in the development of the strategy. I don't know how they can get engaged in the process with the federal and provincial governments, maybe through the various provincial municipal government organizations. Regardless, urban forestry is different enough from all the other identified priorities and deserves a separate section on its own, just like climate change and the forest industry.

We still have a BBBIIIGGG hill to climb from where I am standing. Yodelayeehoo!!!

Merry Christmas and Best Wishes for 2009!

Subject: [CANUFNET] Vision Urban Forests/Forêt urbaine
Importance: High

For the first time, due primarily to our collective work, "urban forestry interests" has been recognized as one of the components of "the forest sector" in the document of the Canadian Council of Forest Ministers: A Vision for Canada's Forest: 2008 and Beyond available on the CCFM website (www.ccfm.org) under http://www.ccfm.org/pdf/Vision_EN.pdf . We should congratulate ourselves on having our message heard. We must further encourage the recognition of urban forests and their proper funding to all levels of government and the private sector in the year to come.
On behalf of the Tree Canada team and the Canadian Urban Forest Network have a great holiday!
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
